More of Ama's ramblings. I'm on a roll today!
I am sure many of your have heard of the Six degrees theory. For those that haven't it is the theory that within six levels you know everyone (or most everyone?) in the world (your society?). So I see a random person on the street, under this theory the longest stretch is that this person knows someone (1 level) who knows someone (2) who knows someone (3) who knows someone (4) who knows someone (5) who knows me (6). There have been some sites setup to draw webs etc of this pattern.
The SL community right now is small but it won't be in the future. I can think of two ways to do it, the simplest and almost invisible to the player would be to mark someone as 'known' when you rank them. A more complicated (better?) option could be to allow you to select a relationship from a drop down menu - acquantance, friend, partner, etc. If you are part of the same group then 'group' could be automatically set as your relationship to everyone in your group.
Then there could be a webpage to show the web of relationships in SL. When meeting someone new looking at their bio/info page could show the shortest relationship chain to that person.
I would also suggest keeping Lindens out of the chain because there are so few of them and they tend to meet everyone.

This would be a great idea to having a friendster style interface with SL.
A trust network would allow us to avoid issues with Alts and it would also quickly determine who to do business with and who not to when it comes to ripped off objects and what not.
It would also be a great marketing tool to encourage more players (your friends) to come into the game.

I think this might be close to a forum record. This thread was posted 11+ months ago by a player who hasn't been on in, oh, 9-months. I think someone missed their calling as an archaeologist

It's interesting to see which suggestions have been implemented and which haven't and historically what people were asking for.
I was going to post a suggestion for friendster functionality, but it's more fun finding the first person who already has and just bumping it.

I'll tell you what people have been historically asking for... boolean objects, mesh support, and all that crap they'll never get

i'm glad blaze resurrected this topic, i think it'd be a neat addition.
some LSL functions to go along with it would be awesome -- you could do things like, restrict object usage to owner's friends, or friends of friends.

An interesting topic, glad you resurected it. Someone used the search box.
Thread Necromancy - I think this is one of the classic skills of the character type: Forum Troll
Not that being a forum troll is a bad thing, i know plenty and i don't dislike all of them.
