I think something that would be very cool would be space. Something like 2000m up the air gets thin and you will need a special suit or vehicle. Then at the 4000m mark you are in space. This could open a whole new range of opportunities to everyone. Space cars, and more. But, since just having an empty nothing up there. Perhaps you can actaully go to the SL moon, or perhaps go and burn on the sun. This could also open up more land, and add more to do for those who don't build or script. moon parties anyone? But to make life easier for residents without space ship capabilities, something like an SL Space program to help people get to moon. If heights are to high, really doesn't matter.. probably space start at 3000 then so there is a whole 1000 feet for space.

It's a good idea, one which may answer the avatar-asked question of, "What's really out there? Are we alone in the universe?" That being said... it's been asked about before. A delicious recurring theme, you may also wish to check out this earlier proposal on the voting tool:

Thanks for the info. :) I sure hope this won't wind up on the dreaded "Can't do" list... I'm sure that there is SOME way lol. I'm jsut glad to see that there may be interest in this topic, I thought it was a silly idea at first.

Great Idea

That is a great idea and they should be able to do, actually just have another sim that is running at a high eleivation up in the sky and for land well it can be like a meteor or something or perhaps empty space and you can build a space station.

Great Idea!

I think that would be a great idea! As for the SL space program, an average antigrav jetpack costs about L$400, so I don't think we really need that. Taking away gravity and momentum is also a good idea. The sun is probably too much for the Lindens to do, and so the moon is probably enough. Also, what about the move mouse with sun function? how would that affect where the sun is? Anyway, great idea! :D

I volunteered to get hit my a push gun (or something) once. I got blown strait up to about 704,000m. I think that's the verticle limit on the sims.

I believe I'm the first avatar to beat 2 billion meters (I actually don't know how high I went, my altimeter was pegged at MAXINT). Beatfox has gone even higher.

Did you check your location? It has a hight value (unless that went *boom* too).
Anyway, I guess I was wrong. :P
[EDIT]
Do you still fall from that hight?

Not in 1.6 it didn't.

I figured out afterwards I could have used the camera position in debug, but by that time the 1.7 update had nerfed push...

Excelent!!! Should leave development to sl businesses!!!
08-18-2006 23:27
This would be my favorite feature of sl. as much as posible should be left to the privet sector (businesses) so as to spawn ecenomic development. i also agree that travel should be limited in some ways to keep the experience interesting (teliporting only to hubs/portals which can be built by in world businesses and purchased/set up by station owners if they choose to have a portal). diferent altitudes should be avalible and "land" could be sold in cubes (instead of a 500 sq m. parsel sell 205000 cubic m. (500 sq m on a side)) getting a sence of direction could be dificult in undeveloped areas unless some sort of beacon is placed at the corner of each plot. these beacons should automaticly snap to the corners of the space being subdevided by developers. the no gravity idea is great and the physics should defenitly be adjusted at this altitude perhaps changing gradually between the atmosphere and the vacuume of space.

Was going to propose this myself!

I was orbited up to 20 mil and nearly crashed my comp, the thing is about 3k being the mark of space, is that after 1k more, u hit what? more space? or do u continue in "earth" of SL?

200m (more or less) - normal flight limit
768m - building limit
4096m - object limit

There's an attachment limit up there somewhere, between "thousands of meters" and "millions of meters", above which attachments aren't rendered.

There's a client roundoff limit up in the millions of meters where the client doesn't calculate the center-point of the separate parts of the body properly any more, and the body gets distorted.

There's a sim/physics roundoff limit somewhere up there where you fall but your altitude never changes, because the falling velocity is too small to make a change in the calculated position.

By the time you get into the billions of meters, it's hard to even see yourself.
