Obviously, the best way to get things in line it to build them that way in the first place, but I'd like to propose a little trick to help tidying up prims that need to be in a line whilst editing. The function would achieve something similar to pre-selection of "Use Selection for Grid", but would not require you to then reposition each object in line with the grid.
SELECTION: Click to select the master prim, then Shift-Click all the prims that you want to align to it.
EXECUTION: Press a keyboard combination that will move all the selected prims to be in line with the first one you selected.
Different key-combinations would be required for "align all selected prims with this one in the X-dimension", "... Y-dimension" and "... Z-dimension". In addition to Undo, perhaps an optional Yes/No dialog for whether this action should be taken would safeguard against mis-alignment.
This would seriously speed up placement of items that need to be on walls, floors, stacked in a pile, etc.
