As SL works now, it takes up all system resources that are available, in order to get as many frames per second as possible.
Maybe this caps out at 60, I wouldn't know because I've never seen it go that high, but in my experience Second Life is quite optimal at 15 frames per second.
What I'd recommend, is the ability for players to choose a maximum framerate, such that when it hits this point it would hopefully free up system resources.
I think this would really benefit content creators as programs like Poser and Photoshop are going to be fairly demanding of system resources as well. When they have to wrestle with SL for every bit of processing power the whole system really bogs down and one can run into a lot of anomalous behavior.
(I know that minimizing SL reduces its demands a great deal, but as I'm sure most people are familiar with it doesn't like starting back up if it's been minimized too long)

I don't want to excessively 'bump' my own post, but come on, no replies? I know it isn't the most exciting thing in the world, but a framerate limiter would effect everyone who multitasks at all with SecondLife, be it programs to create content such as Photoshop and Poser, or just browsing the net to keep entertained while they're waiting for whatever.
And I think it would be very possible for the feature to be implemented. There is already an option in features to reduce draw distance when your FPS is below a certain point, all we need is another option to reduce processing priority when it's above a certain FPS.
I think that would allow us to finetune our clients to create a smoother, more stable experience.
Whether you agree or disagree, without a discussion there's really no telling if this suggestion will ever be considered by LL, and a variety of opinions from many different users may effect their decisions on it.

Why isnt there already?
In fact, a possable "chat only" mode with the abilaty to still upload may be a solution as well.
But cmon a fps limiter? there should be one already.

I think the reason it might not have been implemented might actually be that it simply hadn't occurred to the Lindens that someone might find their framerate acceptable and wish to cap it. Either way, it's definitely something SL could use sometime in the future. If there's enough demand for it now, I'm sure they'll add it to the list. (Though, given the fact that you had to bump your own thread, I kind of doubt there are many people in your position.) To be honest, you're the first person I've talked to who's suggested that SL's framerate is good enough. If you're having trouble running both SL and Photoshop at the same time, try turning down the process priority for SL.

You do know that you can set the priority of any process in the task manager... dont you? CTRL ALT DEL invokes task manager, then click on the Processes tab and right click on the newview.exe process... choose Set Priority... and pick "BelowNormal" or "Low". Of course, when you get back to SL, performance may suffer unless you reset the priority to Normal or better.

some poor folks don't run SL on machines that let you set priority via the task manager...
