"Lite" or "wireframe" mode

I would like to suggest a "lite" mode that doesn't use as much system resources. It could remove all or most textures and allow someone to navigate and talk to people without as much bloat. It could also disable sounds.

Altogether it would be a lot like the "safe mode" in Windows which disables all of the extra features.

An example situation: My roommate has a computer with an expensive video card. I frequently use his computer for Second Life, but when he wants to use his computer I have to go back to using my "weak" Pentium 4 with a 64MB video card if I want to continue my interactions with others on SL. If we had a "lite" mode it would be easier to keep my interactions going without having to hold down the direction arrow and wait 30 seconds to aim my character in the direction I want to walk, then hold down the up direction arrow for a minute and a half to walk a short distance to meet someone.

I could just switch on "lite" mode, navigate to that area, then turn it off again.

Couldn't you just turn all the prefferences down to the bare minimum to achieve the same effect?

I'm thinking he'd also want the benefit of truly only rendering vertexes, and not downloading textures at all...you can't do this now - sure, you can turn it off, but it still slurps down on your connection anyway.

I'd like a 'lite' mode when flying fast, that is for sure.

WARNING *** Default Loading Grey Texture mentioned here!! :)

I would love to be able to set an SL option that would render all unloaded textures in a semi-opaque "The Matrix" green, with a bright, faux-glowing wireframe for the affected prim, until each texture loads.

If there were also an option to switch off texture loading completely, would this be the sort of look you would like, Hiro?

Oooh... make it work like the media texture on land:

CODE

[x] Override loading texture
[ ] All objects: [ ]
[x] Solid objects: [E:\SLstuff\matrix.tga ]
[x] Phantom textures: [E:\SLstuff\smoke.tga ]

It was disabled. Ask some oldbies about it. :)

We accidently had access to a wireframe debug command on one of the previews about a year ago. This feature is normally accessible to the Lindens, and had been for some time prior to it accidently slipping into the preview.

Even after pleading with LL to keep the feature intact for residents, LL stated that they should not give us access to this ability due to "privacy" concerns.

Apparently LL feels that they are under pressure from residents to increase privacy, even if at the expense of offering a very common and useful building tool to everyone, such as wireframe.

I recall that it was also suggested at the time that we can expect more changes to be made to SL in the future to further reinforce more privacy, and that some of these changes may further limit our capabilities (i.e., inability to move your camera as freely as you can now).

Removing Features Not a Valid Alternative

Taking out a feature instead of modifying it to conform to user demand is not, in my opinion, the right way to do things. If the wireframe mode were to be offered, it could render only objects that would be visible after all textures have been applied. This would prevent users from being able to view things that should be hidden by textures.

Or, as previously suggested, it's possible that a generic single-colour texture could be applied to all objects. This would prevent the need to download textures and increase loding time as well as reducing consumption of system resources.

This isn't exactly what I want in the "lite" mode feature, but I think it is a resonable compromise.

Also, it would be nice to have this feature apply also to av's in such ways as to render av's as a single prim instead of loading them and all of their attachments. Also ignore addition of attachments during the time the "lite" mode is enabled.

ZOMG Culling! ;)

And I would also love a wireframe mode. Also, I can't find the thread right now, but there was a "Pencil Renderer" that someone (I think Suezanne?) mentioned earlier that I played around with a while ago that did have some neat rendering options...

Your response, "ZOMG Culling! ;)" didn't provide enough information for me to understand your feedback. Please expound on your feedback so I can better understand what you mean.
