I would like to see the ability to check from the website to see if a sim's server is down or having severe problems at the moment. Some sort of simple external 'status panel' that could indicate Green for sims that are working fine, Amber for ones experiencing bad lag or slow fps rates, and Red for down and unavailable.
So far, when a sim I was in has crashed, it has usually been back up almost as fast as I can log in again. But if it's down for a while, it would be nice to be able to check if it's up again before attempting to log in.
It would also be nice, if you have left a sim for a while because the lag was just too bad, for there to be a way to see if the situation has improved, before going back.

One day last week when I got dumped from SL, it told me that to go to a certain page and check to see if the sim was up, or something along those lines. However, my internet was having issues (which is why I got dumped) and couldn't load it. I had to reboot to get it working again, and I don't recall the URL. The message has never been shown again, either
If that page actually exists, it's very well hidden. I've looked several times, and have yet to locate it.

There is a page that shows the status of the grid: http://secondlife.com/status/ But it shows the status of the entire grid, not a specific sim. Dyne, I think this is the page you were referred to after you were dumped, that's how I found it Cheers, Fairge

There is a "techie" alternative From the "About" box you can see the address of the sim server you wish to check. Note it down. Then ping it from off-world That's the quick-and-dirty approach. Yes, sims sometimes change servers, but that's not so frequent. And sometimes servers reply to pings but are down nevertheless. The technological marketeers' advice: build a product around this idea. Instead of using a ping, use one of the channels that the sim server has open (if it's running). Get a group of volunteers to note down the servers' addresses and update them regularly. Put them down on a centralized web server with a map not unlike the one you have on LL's homepage. Charge people L$ 1 for checking if the sim is up or down. After a few months, develop a new service (version 2.0 ). Rent a tiny, 1 m2 space on every sim. Place an object that checks for sim data (SimFPS, time dilation, etc) -- all these are available from LSL. Send the data at regular intervals to the central web server. Now charge L$ 5 for the service So many people have already developed bits and pieces for this system to work, it's all a question of time to make it into a business venture Then sell ads on the site...
