"Randomize" in the appearance editor should randomize current focus, not whole body

I think it would be a great bonus, for me and for new players, to be able to randomize just certain parts of the body while editing our appearance. Like I'd like to get the body where I like it myself, and then randomize the face a few dozen times to see what happens.

I remember in Star Wars Galaxies, you could do this, and I loved it, because I'm pretty good at making good body shapes, but suck at defining facial features. Just being able to random just the face or just the body, or even just the legs or arms, etc, would be a huge plus.

I agree, because this doesn't sound too hard to implement and provides a better granular control. If anything, it's a subset of what ALREADY exists so it's not technically hard, I should think.

Randomizing the whole body makes... honestly... greefer kin avs, LOLEX.

Reminds me of playing with some synthesizers, they had a randomize current parameter button. You could even specify a simple percentage of variation, and in some cases, set a random seed! Ah.

doesn't sound hard to do, if you wanted to have a bit of fun you could edit the genepool xml file the client pools it's data from to make the random attributes.

I randomized my av a few times when I was a noob, out of sheer frustration :)
The avatar editor isnt exactly intuitive. I would prefer something more like the object editor, where we could see a bounding box or sphere around the bit we are editing, to stretch and rotate it along a given axis.

Can't you accomplish the same thing by grabbing the slider and swinging it left and right?

I once thought this myself, with synthesizers (which have actual sliders and knobs), but it stands: it's not the same. The machine imposes a process on you that can be unsettling, unexpected, yet eye-opening. Squarepusher, in particular, has this theory which goes something like:

From: someone
In his view, our common delusion that only we humans are the sole cause of the creative process results with the machine resisting the composer's will, hindering the process of creation. When the machine is unable to collaborate, it works against its user. In his view, the violent domination of machines produce "artifacts of human stupidity, not art." He says this originates from our ideal to control everything, even the prevention of death. This desire to be "controllers" works against us in every instance it can be found. The artists become frustrated that their machine will not cooperate, and this, as Squarepusher claims, is the reason why so many artists have died young, gone insane or committed suicide.
