I know that there have to be other people who for one reason or another can't log into the game. So, why don't we have some sort of messaging system set up on the SL website? We already have it set up so you can see which friends are online. So why not just add a messaging function?

I wonder... if I'm able to script an object that grabs the keys of my avatar friends, then emails those keys to me... could I then turn around and send email to those keys and have the email arrive in-world as an IM?

I believe that when someone IM's you and it is sent to your email, a session is opened up for which you can respond to their IMs by email. However eventually this times out.

As such, I don't think you can directly email "key@im.secondlife.com" and have it pop up in their IM window when they log on, or email.

Perhaps this has changed since the initial implementation (Lindens are good at that)

Last I heard, when an IM is forwarded to email, the key in the return address would be good for a couple days because it is only a temp key, not the av's real key. But, my curiousity is whether or not I could directly send to an avatar's real key (which does not change over time.) If I had my personal av's key, I would try it right now. Since I'm not online, the IM should bounce back to my email - if it works.

Just tested it... Doesn't work, you get the timeout error.
