Separate streaming media from land ownership

Please, separate streaming media from land ownership. This is really, really an artificial barrier. When I go to a piece of land and hear music or video, the SL servers have no part in this other than to tell my SL client 'connect to this remote server and start playing'. No other data is streamed through SL itself, as far as I know.

There should be no reason for this barrier to exist, other than Linden Lab wanting to add an artificial incentive for residents to buy land and pay tier just to stream media.

I am personally sitting on top of a clustered server environment with damn near unlimited bandwidth, with which I could do all kinds of large-scale operations in SL for thousands of simultaneous residents, all over the SL world. I can't do that because you can't have more than 40 people on a sim at one time, and the cost of owning enough land all over the place to support hundreds or thousands of people isn't feasible.

Please, consider removing this fake barrier and open up SL that much more to us.

I have suggested this before, as have others, in a number of different ways.

A field in your profile for a stream url could be added, or add a play stream option to lsl that could be placed in a prim.

I think LL is missing the boat here, it would be fun to share music streams witout owning land; the retention rate is low; lack of simple fun might be one reason why people leave. Hence increase the fun factor by letting people share music streams without having to buy land.

They could implement the stream playing ability in the web tab browser.

I agree media urls (both audio and video) should be separated from land.

However the urls should not be tied to a profile; Rather they should be tied to objects.

For example, it would then be possible to create iPod/Walkman-like devices in-world.

Is there a Feature Voting Tool entry for this request already? If not we should draft one.

Forgot to add: the media fabric should be "moved" to prims as well, with appropriate changes to llGet/SetPrimitiveParams() (plus a new llMediaCommandList on prims.)

For backward compatibility, the current parcel media settings and functions could remain and/or be used as defaults for the prim based media settings.
