I would rather not post this here, but there aren't a lot of channels between residents and Lindens right now. This seems like the best available, although many questions go unanswered.
This is a simple suggestion for CopyBot that you probably already thought of. We agree there is no full-proof technical solution to CopyBot because any change you make in the client can be countered in the code. I understand and appreciate that. However, there are changes you can make that will allow you to identify and monitor the use of CopyBots. If the people running the CopyBot clients are not aware of your methods of identification, they can not be countered in the code. I am aware of one very simple method of identification that I know libsecondlife knows about that could be utilized on the most widely distributed version of the CopyBot client. Having identified the users, it would be possible to monitor their use of CopyBot and identify potential breaches of the TOS. This way, a large number of illegal uses could be detected before the hackers realise how or what to do to counter it. Many CopyBot users use multiple accounts to communicate with the CopyBot client while in game and transfer goods between CopyBot and their main accounts. If you were able to round up a large number of CopyBot users this way, it would give confidence to the content creation community that you are taking concrete actions towards protecting their intellectual privacy while causing theifs and hackers to worry they are being monitored .. a powerful disincentive.
My opinion is that the harm done to content creators confidence recently because of CopyBot is not purely a result of worrying about technical implications. This is partically a public relations blunder where our community doesn't feel that Linden Labs is showing enough consideration for our concerns and is not taking action that reflects that consideration. Taking a step, even a half-step towards adressing our concerns (and fears) would go a long way toward rebuilding confidence in the community.
I hope you found this suggestion worthwhile. No response is necessary.
