Multithreaded Client

Hi there,

I would like to suggest a multithreaded client. Though I know it's only a small percentage who actually HAVE multiple processors.. But Pentiums with HT (HyperThreading) are leading the way.
Simply moving some of the workload (cache access / network comms) to another thread could, I believe, increase speed dramatically.

I coded a raycaster test on my laptop (Alienware Area51-m, 3.2GHz w/HT desktop cpu, 512MB, latest NVidia go), and simply by adding another render thread gained a speed advantage of around 50% -- it could really work to the advantage of SL, too!

Out of interest, just how many other SL users have HT processors (or multiple processors)?

Thanks
J.W.

It's coming. Just wait a little more. They are actively developing it.

That's great. If the keyboard handler gets its own thread, I think avatar and vehicle controls are going to get a lot smoother in low-FPS situations.

Multithreading will be useful to everyone, whether they have multiple or hyperthreaded CPUs or not.

I'm on a 3.2 ghzHT HP laptop with the latest nvidia go as well - the 5700 128 meg version. (I believe that's still the latest)

Another key to speed on this lappy is I went with the 7200 rpm drive. 4200 really causes things to back up.

Back on topic, I'd love to see support for this, but can't really complain about my SL performance. I typically have a few other apps open concurrently, so, it evens out. Most of the problems I have with performance when it comes to SL are entirely the internet connection I'm on, or a problem at LL.

Regards,

-Flip
