I can think of no valid reason for anyone to have the ability to track others on the grid map. If someone is a Friend, you can IM them and ask for a tp. The ability to a) see where they are on the map, and b) teleport to their location uninvited is, IMHO, completely unecessary.
I have seen cases where people have accepted an offer of Friendship, only to have this new "Friend" show up at their home uninvited and harass them. Yes, the person can be muted, banned, reported, etc., but this would not be necessary if the Show Friends feature were eliminated, or at the very least, made optional with the default option being Do Not Show.
Why give the spies, stalkers and sickos an effective tool to harass residents? And yes, people should be careful as to who they accept friendship from, but often times, these abusers say all the right things to gain trust, as they do in RL. Also, many SL residents are outgoing by nature, and try to be welcoming and friendly to those we meet. I would hate to have SL become a place of mean streets where we all walk around avoiding eye contact. Take away this useless feature.

Plenty of threads on this, but yes, point is as valid as ever, it's a pain and I doubt anyone really likes being mapped. It's nice when someone drops in and says hi in person after checking you're alone and not somewhere you're likely to be super busy, but the majority don't think of that and it gets annoying

If you don't like seeing or talking to someone when online, why make them your friend? If they drop by uninvited and/or are otherwise discourteous, and you don't like it, you should probably tell your friend that. If he/she doesn't understand, you should not consider that person your friend anymore. This is no different from real life. I'm not seeing how this is a problem with anyone but the idiot who doesn't kick such people off his/her friend lists.
On the other side, I do see knowing where your friends are as beneficial. Instead of having to ask for a TP, you can just go. It's far more efficient.

Uhm, maybe because I really shouldn't have to tell everyone on my list, or being added to my list (remember many people add business contacts/customers to their friends list when needed too). It's talking your way around a feature; a convenience feature that means I have to do work so that people won't use it on me, that's completely backwards!

This is a feature that Linden Lab has indicated they will likely remove at some point in the future. The forums have been full of spirited debate on this, and those that wish for mapping to remain are usually far more vocal - accusing anti-mappers of being perverts, wanting to cheat on their partners, or suggesting they should not make so many friends. If making a friend in real life meant that I had to wear a tracking device for them, sure, I might not make as many friends. These arguments are silly. Perfect privacy in SL is an unobtainable goal, but reasonable attempts should be made to offer a modest level of privacy - otherwise SL will continue to be infested with alts, skyboxes and security scripts.

It really helps when you are following someone (At their request). Just follow the big red fuzzy thing. Having to TP several people when you are showing them things can be a real pain. Particularly with the "Post TP Grey world" that seems to be a relatively recent feature of SL.
What I'd like to see instead of getting rid of it completely is making it optional. If you don't want to be findable on the map, you can turn it off. I believe there are many proposals that request this.

I believe there are many proposals that request this. Of course, that is all anybody really wants. Make it optional, configurable on a friend-by-friend basis, and off by default ... this should be "opt in."
