Ok. I've established that under the new streaming system, my inventory takes over 10 minutes to load, during which I'm essentially crippled with lag. Strange, it never used to take me 10 minutes to load during login.
But anyway, what I'm thinking is, given that probably 80% or more of my inventory is literally just there for storage, and only 5% or so I actually use regularly, could we have a non loading 'Vault' folder alongside the 'My Inventory' and 'My Library' where we can dump 90% of our crap, leaving only the other 10% to stream in.
You could either drag something from vault to main to load it, or have the vault load only on request. Probably the former, given that again you don't want 90% of your inventory loading up for 10 minutes just to get one item.
Not only would it make things far easier and tidier for people with large inventories, but it should considerably ease the load on the asset server n stuff.

Ooooooo I am LIKING that idea, that would make it so much easier to open my inventory and move AT THE SAME TIME *approves*

It has been sort of weird adapting to the new format. I never know when I might want an old item from my inventory and it is sort of odd to have to wait for it when I decide I need it. I didnt really mind the time it took to get logged on in the past, it was never too long anyway, and once I was in, all my stuff was there ready to use.
Now I have a bunch of micro-sessions of waiting for stuff to show up in my inventory when I need them. It hasnt been terribly long waits for stuff, but it is sort of a hassle to open a seldom used folder and have to wait for it to load up, over and over and over. Streamlining of some sort would be welcomed.

You can do this already, by putting stuff into boxes. If you have 5000 items in your inventory, putting them into 50 boxes will probably make it load 100 times faster.

But then you have to remember what box you put your item in, find it, take it out and edit it, and wait for that box content to load.

I've also found emptying my trash folder speeds things up too, as it seems to stream trash to me too lmao

I'd rather just have a "Preload inventory on login" option. I only waited a couple minutes before, during which time I could go get a glass of water or put in a DVD or something. It was never that bad. 2463345435346358459645% better than being crippled for 10-20 minutes at a time now when I need something out of my inventory.
*edit*
I love typos!

I totaly agree with Reitsuki.
On a related issue, i seem to have lost some inventory with the update. I didn't notice it until i went looking for one of my favorite shirts and it wasn't where it usualy was, neither were some of it's friends. I can't say how much i have lost. It wasn't an expensive shirt, it's just i don't like loosing stuff.
PS the inventory loss cleared it self up when i relogged. I think an inventory download just got borked.

U are such a smart KRitter!
It would certainly help me and my mess of an inventory.

Obviously, this lag when loading large inventories is a bug. I bet the time spent not rendering the game isn't being spent doing inventory stuff either. I bet its just being wasted while the client waits for some race condition in the load threads. If they fix the bug, the wait, and the side effects of low frame rates, will probably go away.
But I WOULD suggest that the background load of the inventory should start right away, NOT when you first need to open your inventory or select a texture. One time on the weekend, I logged in, and then was pulled away from the computer for almost half an hour. Nothing was going on (no one around, the world was streamed in, etc) and yet when I went to open my inventory, it still had to load it all in. It should have been doing that over the half hour of idle time instead.

I like the idea of having the option to preload your inventory upon login.. Or heck, if need be, I certainly couldn't mind being able to have an inventory "cache" kinda like the program's regular one, but for inventory contents only.. That way if you've opened a certain folder a lot recently, and much of its contents haven't been changed, there's that much less you'd have to stream.

I really don't understand why this was changed in the first place. I had NO problems before with my inventory and now it is creating nothing but lag. I see I am not the only one who has an issue with this 'improved change'. I want to be given the option to revert back to the old way of loading inventory at start-up, instead of the current set up.

I'm one of the larger inventorys, I'm sure. I don't clean it really at all. But I never had too much issue with the load times even so. That said, there were times when I just wanted to pop in-world to do something quick that didn't require my inventory. So having it start loading right away, but not block your connection to the game makes sense. Best of both worlds. It just needs to start early on and not cause problems while it does so.

I agree this would be nice, but it's asking for the wrong thing. If we could move multiple items in one drag, we'd have the vault already. You'd just need to make a "Vault" folder and drag your seldom-used items into it. Its contents would not be streamed down until it was opened. That said, perhaps a top-level, Linden-created Vault folder would come with greater optimization. I don't oppose it, but I'd rather see multiple-moves.
Tiger, background streaming your inventory may make sense from the perspective that your client has idle time to burn. But I doubt the whole SL grid/network has bandwidth to burn (or will forever). If every idle client was streaming inventory, how much additional bandwidth would that take? I'm guessing it's enough that LL cares about that amount. Maybe not. Just can't know w/o a Linden telling us.

You'd just need to make a "Vault" folder and drag your seldom-used items into it. Its contents would not be streamed down until it was opened. Not in my experience. I can open a folder with one item in it and sit there motionless while it says (fetching...) for over 10 minutes.
