It's would seem that most developement-related features in this game revolve around graphics, animation and scripting. Little emphasis seems placed on audio. I have little artistic talent and coding experience, my trade is voice acting. I suggest MP3 support as a means of letting players create longer (in duration), smaller (byte-wise) sound files. I do not advocate this as a means of spreading pirated music or replacing streaming audio(which is mostly mp3 anyway, only not local). However, if MP3 could be supported in the same way that WAV is now, it would allow for more complex sound-related appications due to less required storage space and faster client downloading of sounds. A robot who speaks 200 words of french and 300 words of english would seem doable. A built-in announcer voice for a player-generated would also be more realistic. All in all, it would create many new possibilities.

(If this issue has been addressed in the past and there is some absolute reason why it cannot be done, then I apologize for starting this thread.)

Please support this proposition with your votes.

Sounds are not stored as wav's they are oggs (better than mp3s in many ways)

Take a look at:
http://secondlife.com/badgeo/wakka.php?wakka=Sound

my guess is the reason they don't allow longer samples is mostly not wanting to be a streaming host.. and not adding significant size and lag grabbing the sound objects. (not that people haven't scripted around the 10 second limit)

also you have to pay a big license fee to the owners of the MP3 format if you use it in a program. ogg is free. plus it's fun to say. ogg ogg ogg.

In addition you may want to check out my suggestions for Open Sound Control support further down in this thread:

/13/1d/36159/1.html

I'm currently developing a number of experimental music instruments and actually find the 10 second limitation quite an interesting design "limitation" that's actually not a limitation at all.

Greater control support, and bi-directional data streaming, would be much more useful...as would midi support with soundfont/DLS, and .... ok, I'll stop now:-)

but at least OSC would be good.

Just in case you don't know, the Athenians are hosting a musical instrument building content. If you're interested, IM Olmy Seraph for a notecard about the competition.
