New ban line method

Okay... I'm sure I'm not the only one here who finds the new 200m ban lines HIGHLY annoying. I'm a pilot and boatsman, trucker and occasional hiker... And having an additional 150m of airspace blocked several versions ago has really killed scenic trips for me. Suppose we gave poeple the option to block the space they actually wanted to protect, UP TO 200 vertical meters at a time?

Basically give people the ability to input an altitude range that th "Restriction" block would cover. So say you have a skybox at 500m. Being way up there not enough protection? Well no more need to buy one of those griefish auto-ejectors (The type that give no warning or grace period), or worse - Auto go-homer.

Just check the restriction box and tell it "475" for the lower edge and "525" for the upper. That covers a 50 meter square in the sky. Or maybe you want a wider birth? You could have it cover from 400 up to 600 at max. That leaves ground open to regular travel by low-flying avatars or vehicles, and you still get your precious privacy.

Sound angry? Well, I am a bit. I'm getting tired of flying into ban lines on region borders. Especially in places where nobody is home.

The ban lines for access restricted areas are 60m high, you only get higher blocks if you are banned from a parcel specifically (in which case the height is infinite) which you should really try not to be :P

Is it? I didn't actually realise they lowered it again. Thats still up from 50 though. Heh, I'm not banned from anywhere except a pair of sims because their owner wanted to spite me :p

Still, I think the reasoning stands that this would make a reasonable replacement to security scripts. If you have more than 200 vertical meters of stuff you don't want other people in, then, well. You build too big. >_>;

You may wish to see the replacement for ban lines at prop. 1632.

Does that proposal actually cover getting rid of the ban lines for anything but actual *bans* and replacing them with a real privacy mechanism like the "phantom zone" or "parcel basements" for the far more common "group only" restrictions? I don't recall that being in there... and that's the most important thing of all.

Under point 13, it covers :
From: Point 13

Anyone who does not have access to a parcel should not be able to see any objects or avatars on that parcel. They should not be able to see, hear or interact with *anything* in the parcel. People in the parcel should not be able to see them, and none of their scripts should work while they are in the parcel. They should not be able to rez objects in the parcel, or move already rezzed objects into the parcel. They'd be invisible to the parcel and the parcel and its contents invisible to them. They'd be able to move through it but not interact with it in any way. Being banned from parcels would completely remove an avatar's ability to interact with that parcel or people on it - even their scripted attachments using llSensor should not detect avatars in parcels they cannot access, and they should not see minimap blips for people who are in those parcels. No chat text on any channel by them or any of their objects should reach into the parcel. Preferably, 'ban lines' could be removed completely as there would be no reason not to let banned avatars fly around in parcels they are banned in (because they cannot do ANYTHING there)... so it would be needless to force them to leave. Plus, ban lines are ugly, and a solution where content on parcels one cannot access simply does not render at all is neater, cleaner, and hopefully will result in a lot less ugly features (ban lines) on the landscape, and a lot less impediment to peaceful Residents who harmlessly want to fly around.

So yes, it would cover doing away with parcel ban lines (and for that matter, access lines) entirely, and replacing them with a system where those without access to a parcel can fly through it but can't see or interact with any objects/avatars/agents in it.
