Not sure if this has been suggested before, but how about sending an email creates a notecard?
It's not much, but it might be a bit of a workaround until better functionality comes around.
You'd specify a previous notecard key in the email address or in the subject or something.
Basically this will allow seperate storage without having to have seperate hosting (you'd be sending the email from LSL objects to LL servers..)
