For the life of me, I can't understand why people, including Lindens, build real-life looking architectural features in the game, when the people in it are in Second Life, not real-life, and can a) fly b) not have to eat or go to the bathroom c) get a 360 view at an instant; d) have to relog all the time because of bugs or server problems and d) (as was put very well by Milo in the mall post), have the sighting abilities of a drunk with an eyepatch.

Builders cling horribly hard to the vestiges of our first world, where we only had peripheral vision, we couldn't fly, we weren't taller than 7 feet, we moved slowly, and we didn't arrive from the air. They really need to get rid of this. They do this in order to lure people into a false sense of comfort, that they are merely recreating an ideal and utopian second world that they can make *just like* first world or *better*. But the harsh reality is that the technology and the realities of virtuality mean that we are constantly at a Headbanger's Ball in SL, and it's just not fun.

In other words, why design a real-life looking camp pavilion with low ceilings with pointed eaves and lots of columns in Waterhead, when every newbie landing will bang his head not one but 20 times on the ceiling and the pillars, and also not be able to fight his way out of that structure in order to go and look at the tutorials. It's not uncommon for me to turn around a dozen times trying to fight my way out of that structure, banging my head all the while, and I'm more than 60 days old. What will happen to the newbies that are supposed to be coming to this station.

It really is inconsiderate.

I got to Waterhead probably half dozen times a day and I'm getting damn sick of all the stars I am seeing and the bruises all over my tiny avie head.

My phoenix avvie is nearly 9' tall in SL terms (according to standing beside someone that was measured at 7'1"... they stood as high as the phoenix's shoulder) and I still get about a foot of clearance in the Waterhead /Hidden Lakes hub.... you sure you're not stiltwalking? :)

That is the only flaw with the Waterhead hub. If for some reason you arrive on top of the hub, instead of a landing pad, your banging your head in the rafters. One simple solution may be to null the top of the hub as a landing point.

I don't have the clearance because I arrive flying and banging my head on the top, as Loki said. I don't know if this changes depending on the direction you come from. But then you have to fight your way out of the structure.

Now that I'm hearing Loki's point, I don't know if the answer is to reset the way avatars land so that they aren't in the air, or raise the roof vis-a-vis the air-positioning of the avatar, but the point is, you arrive in Waterhead and bang your head. After you settle and try to orient youself, if you aren't tall, you might have clearance, but then you still have to fight your way out of that structure with all its pillars. I think it would be better to land in open space, and the cutesie camp-like structure should be moved to the side completely. That's how you land at most telehubs, and you still get people stepping on your head.

Heh, I once beamed in through there somehow and got stuck INSIDE the hub. Yes, I banged it badly.

Bug

While I managed to land in the telehub without hitting my head, and paused for a minute to try to fly out of the cabin, I then slammed right up against a big sign hanging from the ceiling that said "TH" on it.

I felt like a bug squashed against a windshield. It took some turning around and maneuvering to finally get free of the cabin.
