Nights are brief in SL. But how about adding some interest to the night sky? From the ground a simple map of stars that wont slow down rendering speeds significantly. From high up where the ground is not rendered a much more detailed portrayal of outer space. A few bonuses: the occaisional falling star or even a full on meteor shower (meteorites landing on Linden land?), the odd comet, an eclipse or two (rare). Might give rise to astronomy in SL. It would be interesting if it corresponded to the few of the universe from a distant point in space or from earth millions of years from now.

the period of full darkness (needed to see the stars) is shorter than the period of light.

A Second Life day is 4 Earth hours long. 0:00 is midnight and 2:00 is high noon. Sunrise is at approximately 0:30 and sunset around 3:30, which results in 3 hours of daylight and only 1 hour of night-time. Refer to the chart below for approximate PST and GMT times. There is no guaranty that this data is accurate. . _____________________

Back to the main topic. I realize there are already some stars visible at night. I just meant to suggest a more creative use of that graphic space where it would not slow performance.
