I wish there were a way that I could build something really expansive (but low-prim density) without having to buy 4, 9, or 16 sims.
For some things, I'd like to have about 2000 prims and about 4 sims of land. For example, sometimes I'm inspired to build a large park, or a city block. Both of these would not require a lot of prims, but they do require a lot of land.
Sometimes I think SL would be a lot more "comfy" and a bit less congested if sims were 512mx512m or 1024mx1024m in size (but with the same 15,000 prims).
Obviously this is impossible to switch to now on the current grid, as this would break a lot of things; but I hope that perhaps in a year's time we might see an alternate grid which we can teleport to, where a sim is scaled to a much larger plot of land.
Here are some low-prim things which are really difficult to create in SL due to land size limits: - parks - a soccer field - custom race track - airports - a lake - a mountain range with a small cottage - your own mmorpg - your own fps game - a golf course
It seems like large themed projects are harder to make than they were prior to 1.2. Under the current system, it requires someone to put down a lot of money for a sim, or for a lot of people to get along and coordinate their creativity to fit a theme.
Often themes don't need a lot of prims, just a lot of space. For example an in-game MMORPG would need a lot of space, but not necessarily a lot of prims.
I feel like I'm not explaining exactly what I'm thinking, but this is sort of the general idea. I think more space would make it easier to create certian types of builds which would just be far too expensive in the current system.
I just feel like the current land ratio doesn't let us do some really grand-scale things. I'm not asking for more prims, just more land to spread them out on.
All of this comes with the presumption that this kind of thing would be a very small or insignificant increase in load on the servers, since the prim count would stay the same.
Does this idea click with anyone else, or do I just sound crazy?

You have a point. But if the world was much bigger and with the same capacity for prims and avs, it would be a pain to fly around. Well, it already is. Plus people have a tendency to want to use every little bit of land, so they would start building bigger houses and have no prims to decorate them. Of course for some specialized applications, more land would be nifty.

I endorse this feature/idea, would be neat to see this for some things.

I'd like to see (maybe for verion 3.0?) is automatic load balancing for individual plots. Then the "sims" would just be named areas and not a single computer per. Instead, nearby plots would all be run by one computer, unless one of them started needing more processing power, then the plots would start shuffling between CPUs until everything had all the power it needed and no computer is left idle or completely bogged down.
There would have to be meta-clusters of 4 or more regions (now sims) all run cooperatively by 4 computers. Each one would have all the data for all four sims, but could hand off the changes and operations to any of the other three if it started getting too low an FPS.
That party next door wouldn't be killing you after that.
