Feature proposal: "soft links" to objects in the outfit folders

Here is the problem:

When you got a no-copy object, or an object with scripts reacting to removal/attachement, dragging and dropping a new outfit folder on your avatar does have consequences: the attached objects are removed: you must then re-attach them by hand, and objects such as scripted collars, chastity belts, etc... get triggered and send an IM to your "owner" to report a removal, while it was not your intention to remove them in the first place...

The two above problems could be solved elegantly by adding a "soft link" feature. A soft link is a fake item which actually points onto a true and -unique- object. By placing a soft link to, for example, your scripted collar in all your outfits folders, the actual object collar would never be removed when draging and dropping those folders on your character. For "no copy" objects, it would also allow you to have this object referenced in more than one outfit folder, while there is only one copy of that object in your inventory...

Good idea - this would let you buy no-copy objects and put them in all of your outfits.

I don't think it would be so useful for collars/etc though - as when you drop a new folder on your avatar, the first thing that SL does is DETACH all existing attachments on your av. So what would happen is that the collar would get detached and quickly reattached, but it would still IM your owner about being detached for a few seconds.

If you wanted to avoid the collar problem, you'd need something more like "if I drop a new folder on my av, and it contains shortcuts to the SAME item as the last folder contained, then don't detach that item".

Of course: it's just a matter of implementing things properly ... :p

right click the folder in inventory and select "Add to outfit" instead of "Replace outfit"

Then the collar, chasity belt, etc will not unwear.. unless a new object in the folder replaces them at that attachment point

Only problem is if there's an item that isn't replaced that you don't want on for the new outfit.

Prop 1165 has the most votes, I recommend you put your votes there.

From my (admittedly short) experience, what you describe here does not work... For example, if you wear a collar and make a new outfit, then drag and drop another outfit (without the collar in it) on your avatar, the collar -is- removed...

Well spotted !... Yet the description of the feature does not mention the problem of all items getting removed before the ones of the drag'n-dropped outfit are put in place... The implementation I propose would include a check for already worn/attached softlinks and, should a softlink of the old outfit point on the same object than the one in the new outfit, the object would not get removed.

I don't think it is possible to amend a vote proposal, so I will keep mine in the list. Lindens will most probably "coagulate" all the similar proposals into one, anyway, should they decide to implement them. ;)

That's already been addressed.

Look the the folder context menu. There's three new items at the bottom of the list, and they allow you to remove all the worn objects in the folder, replace everything you're wearing with the contents of the folder, or just add what's in the folder to the contents. I believe the last option will have the effect you're looking for. I've been using it for the past few days and it does not remove objects unless they're being replaced on the same attachment point... in which case I would be surprised if that didn't happen.

Locking objects so they can't be replaced isn't really anything to do with soft links, and besides there's proposals for it already in the system.

Unfortunately... usually not until one of the proposals goes over 500 and someone points out that they need to be combined, and they're not too busy.
