Drop Inventory to Group

Right now the only way to communicate with members of a group is to IM the group. This has a significant drawback of not delivering the IM to members that aren't currently in-world. Yes, there are (good) reasons for this limitation. But there should be some way to communicate to all members of a group whether they are in-world or not. As it is now, it is tedious to IM or drop a notecard on each group member individually.

My preferred solution is to allow dropping inventory items to a group, just like you can to a resident. Everyone in the group would get a copy of the item, say a notecard. If the item is no-copy, the operation would fail. A group could have several permission levels for a group drop: only allow officers, only allow members, allow anyone. Coupled with having a closed group, that should prevent use of this feature for griefing.

If group object drops can't be done, I'd like to see an IM to all members of a group, including off-line members. Again, this feature could be restricted to officers or members.

I think this would go a long way to making groups a more useful feature in SL.

I'm so behind this suggestion. As the founder of Edifice Rex, a builders group of 116 members, it takes a good while to deliver competition invites, judging rules and assorted objects I send out to the group at times.

I'd so love to drop something on everyone all at once. Group events get so lost in events these days...it's great that Second Life has so many events going on at any given time, but it's hard to make a group's events stand out to its own members in that sea of event announcements.

If any limitation needs to be made...perhaps make it so only officers or the founder has access to group drop, lest everyone be bombarded with advertisement spam.

Group Drop

I'm liking this 100%. TO keep potential for misuse dowm, officers should be able to make a drop. Owners/founders may not really be involved with the group any longer. Irregardless of the perms..this is a more than useful iddea...thanks Olmy

We definitely need it to be easier to make collaborative working work.

I was thinking that what would rock would be something like the Library folder within the Inventory, but for groups, so that everyone in the group can see and edit the same set of scripts etc.

That would make life sooooo much easier.

What do you think?

That's a great idea. Inventory folders could be like this:

Inventory
-Library
-My Inventory
+Group Inventory
--Artistes de Montmartre
--Codas
--Second NAMES

I think there's still a good use for dropping inventory on groups, but both ideas would work well together. Of course, there would be issues with permissions to work out...

Group inventory sharing has been implemented in our build tool for SL. IM me if you are interested in beta testing.
