Do you use Camera Controls especially when you edit your object? I do and often use it. And I always think why Mini Map is on the screen but the Camera Controler is not whenever I enter SL. Although I might be lazy, I don't lke to seek and choose Camera Controls on the pull-down menu. I'd like to see the Controler on the screen all of the time even if I get re-log after one displaying it. Otherwise, please make short-cut, like "Alt-c" or something.

Practice using your ALT and CTRL keys to control the camera. When you press ALT, your cursor will change to a magnify glass and when you left click, you will focus on the center of where your cursor was. You can then slowly drag your mouse around to change your camera view. While in this ALT view, you can press the CTRL button and you can orbit around what you are focused on. It takes a little practice, but it will become second nature and its a lot easier and better than the camera control tool.

I use both methods, but the "camera control" panel is an EVERYTIME I log into SL "gotta go get the panel again" thing.
I'd like it to be a selectable option, like the mini-map to stay out, really any of the little pallettes should be "dockable" and have an option someplace to "save" our SL desktop if you will, ala Photoshop or just about any other proggy out there.
Think of all the millions of moments wasted on grabbing that little pallette that might be expended instead upon oh, I dunno, forum pithyness or making 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5 wooden cubes? How will the SL world be different?
Kidding aside, Please, Please, Please lovely Lindens let us choose! With sugar on top! & a case of Mtn. Dew & a case of JOLT cola (now if that's not love...)!!
Thx, I remain thankfully (sucking down the Diet Coke, I'll share if you prefer),

i want camera controls to be an option too. and loki i do use crtl and alt to move the camera, but they dont cover all the options that the camera control palette gives you. you cannot move the camera in a straight line vertically or horizontally without it.

jester Yes you can, using ALT+CRL+SHIFT will pan the camera.

As a minor hijack, I'd also like to see more powerful camera tools for offsetting and rotating the camera on a set path in-world, perhaps at the expense of PERMISSION_CAMERA, for visual "tours" of a region. Perhaps even llMoveCameraToTarget?

Please, please let the cam controls be left open. Or at least give it a shortcut.
I get a little bit more finesse with the cam controls than with the mouse and use that palette all the time.

From: Enabran Templar I get a little bit more finesse with the cam controls than with the mouse and use that palette all the time. If that's the case, I'd recommend getting a better mouse, or at least adjusting your mouse sensativity and accelleration settings properly. 3D modeling is all about camera control, and the mouse is the most fluid and controllable tool there is for it. If your mouse is good, and your settings are good, then I'd suggest practicing. I've been modeling for a long time (in SL and out), and as a modeler, I can promise you there is no faster or more reliable way to control the camera than with the mouse. The hand-eye coordination that equates the mouse movement with the point of view should be second nature. There are several problems with using the onscreen controls: 1. There's no accelleration with those controls, so differentiating between fine movements and broad ones is impossible. With the mouse though, how fast you move your arm is how fast the camera moves. With proper settings and a good mouse (I highly recommend Logitech MX-510, simply the most responsive mouse I've ever seen) the amount of fluid and dynamic motion control you can achieve is incredible.
2. There's no way to set the camera's focal point with those controls, so you have relatively little control over what you're looking at, whereas with the mouse, as soon as you alt click, the focal point is instantly set to whatever you clikced on and the camera immediately responds accordingly.
3. Probably most importantly, there's no physical feedback when all you do is click an arrow on the screen, which means you're brain is relying a lot more heavily on visual feedback than it should have to. This makes everything take longer and it consumes a much larger portion of your brain's processing power than it should have to, meaning you become drained quicker (if all you do is make new bracelet for your av once in a while, this might not seem to matter, but for those of us who model all day it's huge). However, when you're in the habit of using the mouse to move the camera, your brain develops a kind of physically responsive memory (similar to riding a bike), that once learned happens automatically. You begin to "feel" the camera movements instead of having to think them, which is many, many times faster, and consumes almost no brain processing resources. This leaves you much more free to devote thought to your creation without interrupting the process every time you need to move the camera (and trust me, whether or not you're consciously aware that taking your mind off your creation for a second to click an arrow degrades your creative process, it does). Just as once you've trained your body to ride a bike you never again have to think about how to do it, once you've trained your arm to control your point of view you never have to think about that either. As I said, it becomes automatic.
Anyway, now that I've said all that, if you still want a shortcut to the onscreen controls, they are already in place: alt+up/down arrow = zoom in & out alt+left/right arrow = rotate side to side
ctrl+alt+up/down arrow = rotate up & down ctrl+alt+left/right arrow = rotate side to side
ctrl+alt+shift+up/down arrow = pan up & down ctrl+alt+shift+left/right arrow = pan side to side Once again, I can't stress enough the inferiority of this type of control as apposed to mouse control, but it's there if you want to use it. The arrow keys behave exactly as the onscreen controls do.

All that stuff about mouse control vs. keyboard control is true no doubt... unless you're experiencing lag. Then it can become really quite useful to know that you've only clicked once, and you should be adjusting by 1 increment of whatever. That being said, thanks for posting the camera keyboard stuff. (Anybody want to give us the Mac equivalents?) neko

Neko,
I haven't tried it on a Mac, since I haven't used a Mac since school, but in most cases [alt] on a Windows machine equals [option] on a Mac. Give it a try.
BTW, I hadn't previously considered what you said about lag. Good point. Thanks for that, although I would't recommend building while you're lagging.

2 Types of Lag....
02-06-2005 12:09
I would also recommend that when you're building, you find a secluded area with few (or no) avatars around. Turn your graphics settings down a bit, too.
Network-traffic lag may cause a few hiccups while creating and modifying things...
But Graphics / Display slowdowns are far more likely to cause the screen to be "jerky" and make you have imprecise control.
Use the ALT-1 shortcut to open the Stats screen. If your FPS isn't at least 25 or so, turn down your graphics settings a bit (for example - turn your draw distance way down! You don't need to see that far to build; and it will dramatically improve your FPS). Do your major building. Then turn your graphics settings back up to ensure your product looks the way you want - its much easier to do final tweaking under "slow" graphics conditions, than it is to try to do major building in those circumstances!
I've been a level-designer for 13 years, and have had my tutorial websites printed in the manuals of such games as Half-Life; and I agree whole-heartedly that nothing is faster or more precise than a well-adjusted mouse + keyboard combo. It is essential to pratice those ALT combinations, and get comfortable with moving the camera around via the keyboard & mouse. I use the ALT & arrow-keys almost exclusively, while building.
Take care,
