There's something about the "popular places" list that bugs me - basically that the places I see listed on it appear to be there, not because they're popular, but because they're "gaming the system" - one or two openly advertising that fact in their "about" text. And it looks like they're making the effort, because of the cash payoffs awarded for being high on the list.

The end result is a useless list of lame places, whose sole point of worth sems to be that they're bribing people to go be there.

Now, a list of popular places *is* a good idea, if it's handled properly, as it's always a benefit to find great new places to go see. But right now, that's not what we're getting. The list only shows us places who have become the best at playing games wth the rules, or who have become the most adept at "buying friends."

The obvious answer is, dump the awards so these places stop making a business out of gaming the list.

Since this is linked to the dwell-extravaganza that happened lately, I thought I'd respond. Some people in SL believe in the potential, and make some rather interesting things. Other people see a different kind of potential, and fill the world with malls, clubs and casinos.

You could argue that any of those pursuits are entirely valid, but in the end it just depresses the artistic community when they become 90% of what you find in SL as a whole.

The top picks, I understand, are manually assigned by Linden Lab. I don't know how this process works, I've never really tried to make any attempt to be on that list. I gather you say "Hey, look at this!" and if one of the lindens have time, they'll come over and see if it meets whatever criteria they use.

Haney made it clear that dwell isn't going away. They are looking at any attempt to 'game' the system, however. This is encouraging. As for the rest of SL filling up until it is wall-to-wall malls, clubs, casinos, etc.. that depends on the residents, who obviously have voted for the fat middle part of the 'average' bell-curve.

Does it bother me? Yes.

Can I do anything about it? No.
