Sound feedback when Chat message has arrived

Can we hear a ding or beep when the Chat message is delivered?

We often end up staring at the screen waiting for that Chat message to deliver when we hear the typing sound, but would have not idea if the person may have cancelled the mesage. In a crowd room with lots of avatars around, it is very straining and tiresome to scan for who is typing and whether the message has arrived.

A ding or a beep would help tremendously when the message has arrived, so we don't have to stare at the crowded screen for nothing. My neck hurts after hours in SL.

It also helps when we are busy doing other things in the meantime, like checking our inventory or searching in the background, and not to worry about missing a message. When we hear that ding, then we can switch back to Chat without missing a beat, and respond instantly.

Almost all other email, IM or chat software produce an audible sound when the message arrive to give the user the instant feedback. How come SL cannot do that?

If someone finds it annoying to hear too many dings in Chat, then create an option in the "preferences" to turn Chat arrival sound on or off, or mute by the user.

Yes! I'd love this as well. Did you have anything about IMs coming in as well? I frequently end up doing something AFK, but within 15 feet and only check for the button (or other chat messages) every few minutes and might get distracted for hours!

Really?

I made an item that did this (called "Carriage Return";) mostly for a joke. Feel free to IM if you'd like one :)

Yes, IM has similar problem of not knowing when it arrives. If your IM window is closed, it will ding you twice (that's what I want), but if your IM window is open, it doesn't make any sound, except flashing the name-tab. But if you have multiple IMs going on, it scrolls off the window, it is extremely difficult to keep track of what is happening. Most of the time, I realize someone IMed me only half an hour later.

It's like you have to glue your eyes to the screen and cannot leave the screen for a second if you are afraid of missing something. Worse yet, your friend thinks you are stuck or away when they don't see you respond, just because you didn't even know they have IMed you or sent you the Chat message.

Well, thanks for the script object attachment, but the trouble is I found out that all the other people at the other end in Chat and IM would hear the "carriage return" noise (sounds like "cash register" ringing up sound), and it is annoying to the other party, esp. when they are playing SL at work!!! and there is no way that they can mute it.

So it should have an option that the user can turn it on/off, rather than forcing them to hear that annoying noise without their approval.
