"Friends online" as an independent application

Hello everybody,

I often log in to SL only to see if some of my friends are online, but since it takes so much time for the application to load, I often refer to the "friends online" page from the SL website instead (https://secondlife.com/community/friends.php).

What I would like even better would be a small, independent application that I can have running all the time checking which of my friends are only in certain intervals and that notifies me with a sound or message ("Peter is online now";), just like most of the instant messengers like ICQ do. It would really be a conveniant way of having a look at who is online without starting the main SL application.

I could imagine this as an independent program, as well as, for example, a gadget that integrates into the "Google Desktop" sidebar (http://desktop.google.com/).

Just wanted to post this suggestion here to see if anybody else would find this useful.

Regards,

Orko

I wonder if it would be possible to turn this into a Konfabulator or Dashboard style widget, you know those little javascript based programs you can run and bring up at a key-press?
If they are working on Jabber integration though, then you would be able to see your friend's status in any Jabber capable chat-client.

If you're a Mac user there's a widget you can download that does just that. It's called (spookily enough) SL Friends Online.

Now I found out that there already is such a solution for Windows, too:

Great, just what I was looking for :-)

Check out the free mac dashboard widget at http://www.sweetvitriol.com. It displays your firends online and SL stats. You need an ingame widget server to enable the widget -> SL IM feature and the 'my property' stats stuff, but you don't need one for the rest.

You can also get it from apple's widget site at: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/games/secondlifestatus.html
