Ok this may seem strange to most of you so I will try to explain the background for this suggestion. I know this a bummer subject but please bare with me.

I am a cancer patient, a survivor up to this point, but not in remission. It keeps returning and I keep fighting it. I have won many times in this battle, but it only has to win once, so I hope for the best and plan for the worst.

I'm not looking for sympathy. Many, many, many people in this world have it much worse then I. I have a great real life and second life. I hope to have a long life, but am forced to plan for a future for my loved ones incase I must go. This planning has spilled over into second life for me as my real life and second life overlap.

What I'd like to see could be done in many forms, it is up to you. It could be a writen last will and testament that I write myself and submit to the Lindens. It could be a form, created by the lindens that I fill out. It could be in my account settings or in the gui. It could be one way now and made better later. It could be expanded to allow for visitor accounts with-in an account as well which I would love to see someday. But I will expand on that another time.

What I would like to see is a way for me to leave an account to someone. In my case my business partner. In the document I could leave contact info for real life confirmation and directions as to what to leave to whom. I am not talking about splitting up inventories or anything. I am talking about an executor for the account. This executor could then follow any further instruction to him/her left in my inventory as what to do next.

I think this could be helpful for the Lindens when dealing with a situation like this too. Especially now that we can have a savings of US $ in our accounts and can use prepaid credit cards that could last past my death until the balance runs out, where a normal CC would be closed out upon my death. My plan is to have this given with the account. This would be covered in my RL will too. But knowing ahead of time how the Lindens feel about his and/or being able to set this plan into action would really be a relief to me as well as some others I am sure.

If this were to be a feature I know and hope it would be one of the least used features in SL. I can only hope you will concider it.

Please feel free to make suggestions or comments. Any input is apreciated.

Lindens please contact me personaly if this could not be implemented on an automated scale but you are willing to talk about individual cases. Thanks in advace for your time.

I know, I know. You have to talk to the lawyers first. :P

P.S.
I wanted to post this here first to get input before posting it to the vote section which I will do after getting some comments.

I think this is a great idea. They definitely have to talk to the lawyers, though.

i like this idea, i cna see how this will come in handy not for only when something happens to someone and they are no longer able to play game but maybe also when someone is bord with the game you just do something to act on the will and it automaticlly puts it under your partner/ person in will's name and then they folow instructions and stuff. then after a while the account wil be deleted and all contents, money, ect. that wasn't cleared out goes to your partner.

this is a really good idea and i do think they will have to talk about it to their lawyers lol :D (emphisis on s)!

ps. good luck with your current situation ;)

I Agree

I agree since I am in a simular situation regarding my health... not Cancer but several other health problems that will result in the untimely end result. Without going into to much detail ... when I first became ill I was on 2 liters of oxygen and now I'm on 5 - 6 and have been bed ridden for 7 yrs now and everytime I get "sick" I battle to keep hanging in here.

I too have been trying to set up what will happen once that time comes when I will no longer be here and since I have several businesses the question you have brought up is one I have wondered about myself especailly now since the "no share account" post was posted. It would be great to have something people in our situation can do and I know there is quite a few others in Second Life that share our plight.

I was thinking of a movie like Bicentennial Man, partially for the reason of such a long and enduring lifespan. And I wonder how these augmented lives could apply to us... humans... and I wonder about people with horribly debilitating injuries or other severe conditions who are for most practical purposes, "dead" offline, but live a happy, healthy productive existence in an online world like Second Life. (Yes, I am thinking of Ng from Snow Crash too.)

This seems natural (as life and death are part of the natural life cycle too) that it'll become increasingly relevant in the future. It's not strange in 2006 AD to gift a loved one with a computer after death, but what about all these "virtual" assets? What about the creations and IP that have come about in Second Life, and other works that may be protected by password, strong encryption, or other methodology? How will the "seals" be opened to be handed over?

To those of you not in the best of health, I can relate. After having gone through several ordeals myself, including ending my music career because of hyperacusis which really gets bad on some days--and subsequently finding out about SL and thinking a lot about the issues on hand, in the longterm, I would like the comfort of passing on a lot of things, so they don't die with me.

Poignantly, it adds a whole new meaning to "Second Life".

Techzen,

What a novel idea! I applaud you. Not only for the idea, but for fighting. I too am a cancer survivor (x2) and know first hand the emotions you are experiencing. My thoughts for healing and prayers are with you and your family. Just keep fighting it if you are able to do so!

Livestrong,

Above is the link to the vote on this idea.

Thanks for all the posts, I was afraid this would be drop quickly.

I missed the "no share account" post but will find it and get back on that.

Second life really is a second life for many people. In many cases it is a chance to do more than our physical lives will allow us to do in the real world. For me it has been a second chance at independence, financial freedom and most of all love. :-)

I hope this will open a dialog with more Lindens not only on this subject but other features that would be highly apreciated by the disabled community in SL. Not only would SL be doing a great service to the community, they would also be making accessability to SL possible for so many more people who could gain in their quaility of life by having it.

Thank you for the kind words. Rest asured I am a trooper. This is more for peace of mind than anything. :-)
