I'm sure this has been beaten to death, but I felt I would like to add a suggestion.
Since you can attach wav files and play them in sequence on personal objects (A large server load because of the number of files), there should be a drag and drop item that you can use in leiu of a wav file to play a Shoutcast stream URL from wherever, on an object you can either drop on the ground, or wear, like an iPod.
This way, you could have 'mobile DJ's running around, and anybody within proximity (say, 10m default, maybe max a default distance) who wasn't already playing the Parcel owner's stream, can play the DJ's portable stream. Djs could then guest at locations (Like portable Radio Vans in RL).
Many people might prefer to use their own shoutcast servers from their personal machines to stream audio to an object, bandwidth being their own issue instead of SL's.
Pros: Less bandwidth used directly from the SL servers Portable DJs Overrides parcel land streams only if they're not already playing Can be worn, dropped, or given Quality is determined by the streamer and controlled live from their own home Controlled in-game, not through an external player
Cons: Abuse (Too many personal DJ's in one area, maybe) Complaints about bandwidth useage from people who don't understand how it works
I've done some forum browsing, and what I've found is very vague and hints that it's already possible, but a lot of what I've found also results in failure because it requires a person to be a land owner to do things only on their land, which defeats the purpose.

Actually, I would say the correct approach to this is a stream url not tied to property, but instead to your avatar. Your personal stream could be set from script. You could then make a dj system and a client system that would allow people to tune into whatever djs are in the area.

would have to be a setting that requires permission to change, could also be fun for vehicle radios . A personal station set would either have to override the parcel station, or be switchable down by the volume, play, stop bar.

its not a bad idea but way way WAY prone to abuse, as evidenced back in There with dropped radio speakers and stations all the time fighting for listenership in highly populated areas etc.

It should have a mandatory main control in the preferences to toggle whether or not you even want to hear them, like you can regular audio streams from land.
Also, to prevent abuse, maybe it should require clicking on to activate? Hence an object, so that you had to click it to join the stream if you wanted to tune in, or not, so you didn't have half a million streams all trying to play at once, only whichever one you selected.

changing someone's stream should require permission.

Some old threads somewhat one the topic

Being able to play a stream through the SL player is one of the justifications for buying land. This may be why this option is not and will not be made available. A thread I made about personal streams Streams on Huds Hiro Pendragon thread on avatar based streams

Also..
Streaming audio on a persons land dosent use any more sim bandwidth than a land with no audio.. the land simply points the viewer to the shoutcast stream of the land owners choise.. it goes from that stream straight to your PC, not from the stream - throguh the land - to the PC.

While we're talking about streaming...
01-12-2006 09:00
Most of the streams I've tried to use on my land do absolutely NOTHING in SL. No sound for me or anyone else. Apparently most of the stations I like are using the wrong kind of streams.
I haven't been able to find much on exactly what the requirements for streaming media in SL are. Anyone have details?
