Not sure if this has already been brought up...I did a search and didn't really find anything...so here it is.
I would like to see the ability to turn on or off receiving IM's. It's just a privacy tool I would like.
Sometimes I find myself hidden away in my studio and I don't wish to be bothered with IM's. So I set my "Busy Mode" option. But then a close friend comes a long (that I don't mind socializing with) so in order to communicate with her in chat....i have to take the busy mode off...which is an open invitation to others to IM and to hear that annoying "you've got an IM" sound.
Now with this IM on/off feature...it's exactly what it is. Not a tool that will still allow IM's to be received and/or stored...but IM's shut off completely. Maybe a message even going to the sender saying "Sorry this avatar is currently not receiving messages at this time. Try again later" or whatever. Cause even with busy mode....you still receive them....and if anyone is like me...i'm always tempted to read them and I do. Just a thought.

I just wish we had the option to make them go to the IM box only. Often times I sort of would like to see what is on the screen and not have it spammed with IM content. The IM is in the IM box, I can look at it when I get to it, no need to have it mixed in with chat on the screen too.

It's under the IM tab thing...you just check or uncheck the "Include my IM in chat history" box

Thanks, but not really the same. All IM still goes to the screen, the chat history option just keeps it out of the chat history window. I have never had that enabled, IM still goes to the screen and IM window as it happens.

Sigh, I have expressed the same desire to to be able to not have the IMs appear in the regular scrolling text display and every single time somebody says the thing about being able to keep it out of the chat history.

What i would realy realy realy realy realy like is the ability to turn off group IM sessions. I will not name names but about 5 of my groups continually start new sessions every 15 minutes for random things. I'd hate to leave the groups. Some are important, some im a officer, and others are so i receive product updates on things. I meen if the group chats arent going to be IRC style atleast allow us to disable them...

I agree, more controls over group chats is needed. The ability to stop receiving messages (muted) from a certain group if they are talking about nothing you are interested in. And a temporary feature, meaning after a set period of time the group will be "unmuted". So if a important (or interesting) session starts later on you will still receive it.
As for IM in general, more controls are needed there as well. It would be a great advantage if all messages but those on your friends list would be stored for later review as busy mode does now. Then you would still get messages from friends, but everyone else would get your busy mode message. Or even better yet, have the ability to specify who you want to receive messages from while you are in busy mode. Perhaps a "busy override" list.
