Why cant there be a texture setting that mirrors reflections. Much like Shiny On does?

You should be able to put a mirror above youre SL bed

Because it involves raytracing or a very convoluted "double # of prims to render" and a single raytrace....it's too CPU and RAM intensive.

Apparently, having a single mirrored surface in sight effectively doubles the number of calculations necessary to render what you see. Adding more mirrors makes it even worse... For a real-time 3D environment, it's effectively impossible to do.

There are some impressive tricks that have been used to 'fake it', including one that I have heard of that you sit on a pose ball in a specific position and it actually switches your point of view to a camera on the other side of the 'mirror', looking through the back of the mirror at your avatar.

Slow mirrors...

One thing that could be done to make mirrors work without causing as much lag would be to have the client perform a low-rez render of the view from the prim at the appropriate angle into a client-side texture, updated every few frames, depending on how much of the screen the bounding-box of the mirror surface was visible... the more visible, the more often and the higher res it would need to be updated.

This would only work for plane surfaces, and would get funky effects for multi-prim mirrors, but at least only mirrors you were actually looking into would lag you, and with a touch of shiny you could get quite good results.
