Instead of URLs. Would'nt it be nice to be able to upload your favorite songs to a list to be played on your land? A playlist of sorts, makeing your land more your personal space. Not sure if these is even possible but just a thought.

While nice, this idea has been shot down before. Not by LL, but by the user base.
Reasons: 1) requires more data storage space and network bandwith. Not to mension more servers to dedicate themselves to streaming the music to a 1000 sims. You're talking scarse and costly resources here. 2) LL supports the Digital Mellenium Copyright Act (DCMA). Wich means to be able to store and stream your music they'd have to pay royalty fees or else be sued by the RIAA. Because even if you paid for your music, it'd be in LL's possesion and they didn't pay for it. In the end, neither I nor any other member of SL not gonna pay more per month on tier/subscription rates so you can upload a gig or more of your (probly illegal) music collection because you don't wanna go find a nice legal streaming music station, create one of your own, or open up iTunes/WinAMP. |

I know that my friend Foolish Frost has started a business to do exactly what you're asking for. I don't know how much he charges, but I'm pretty sure it's fair. You give him your playlist, and he sets up a stream and gives you a stream URL that you can set on your plot.

I do appreciate the explaination. however not all of us have tons of illegal music on our systems. I proudly pay for my music on ITunes. Now having said that, I was unaware of the extent of issues involved in the process of having playlists so I am glad to at least have that explained to me.

Yeh, I haven't been able to find a good station playing distinctively Louisianan music for Coonspiracy Central here, Jazz, Zydeco, that sort of thing.
But I don't expect LL to provide a streaming service for me, I'll just have to set up a stream at my colo... |

Eric, It's not all about how you obtained the music. Buying a song from iTunes is not the same as streaming licensing, which is covered by the DMCA as Ron mentioned. Even if you purchased the song legally, someone would still have to pay additional licensing fees for the streaming. Also, if you have purchased songs from iTunes, those use digital rights management which would pretty much rule out what you describe. You can only use those files on a limited number of computers that you have registered your iTunes account on. That would not include the servers at LL. Kyushu |
