Can't someone do something about the avatar typing on the air while chatting? I think is weird, feels funny... I mean when I came to SL I thought was cool, but is it going to change sometime soon?
Can the avatars move their hands like when you talk in RL? or maybe move their mouth simulating talking? Better than typing on nothing!
Oh well.. just a thought!!

I hear ya, Palomma -- alternatively, you can get a nice keyboard from the likes of Eddie Escher or Brian Mifflin, they have a variety of selections to choose from. Example picture of EE's is here: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/Torley2/Snapshot_2859.jpgI happen to be at Brian's place in Brownlee (92, 152) right now. He has an LCARS (Star Trek) and Powerbook laptop interface. That way, your typing won't feel so empty and strange!

hahaha... but still... I think SL is pretty close feeling to RL in many things... feels kinda funny carrying with a keyboard all the time and talking to people while standing haha.. But yes...looks kinda cool...

Clearly there's a need for what you're suggesting. Any scripters wanna take this on?

How about just not typing? I have a script that stops me from typing.

Thanks for the plug Torley.....In reply....you don't have to really carry it all the time, most keyboards, including mine fade out when you're not typing, and fade in so you can see them when you are typing.

I like it. It helps me know when someone i'm talking to is actually saying something and just taking a while to type it up, instead of just not saying anything at all.

haha sorry Torley i got to say the manual typewriter in that pic is cooler than yours. i suppose you could use a animation overrider to get rid of the typing anim but you can't stop the typing sound can you?

you can change the type animation/sounds using one of those open source animation overloaders.

Hm, I know about the animations (I use Francis Chung's frantabulous Franimation Overrider 1.5 -- anyone who wants a copy, just IM me inworld) -- but the sounds? I didn't know about that. Can you please give more details on this?

When you are laying on a couch with someone or standing behind someone you are talking to looks like that person is scratching your back or tickling your belly if you are too close!
It is so funny!
Torley can you seach for my profile and drop me a copy of that override? thanks!!

If you want to get rid of this odd feature, all you have to do is type a backslash before you start typing and your avatar won't keep typing like an idiot in a visible way, he will be in like command mode or something so you can't have that animation. Of course, you have to keep doing that and it is hard to remember, and after a few weeks of struggling with that, you will let it go and let your avatar type like an idiot.

Torley you're all smart n' stuff so maybe you can tell me..... the only Franimation override i've seen is like 25 prims and a tons of animated textures. is there any place to get just the script and put it in a plain old resource unhogging prim? Prokofy no mention of fetedness? you could at least claim it makes the masses bow their heads before they speak.

From: Prokofy Neva If you want to get rid of this odd feature, all you have to do is type a backslash ... Gabe's Quick Guide to Slashes, You Idiots (with sincere apologies to Bob the Angry Flower, which I ripped off mercilessly and in a far less creative manner.)I wanted to inline this, but much to my disappointment, the forum wouldn't let me.

The fade-in typewriter is brilliant! LOL! Why hasn't someone done this before? Actually what would be even more appropriate (for me) is some sort of gesticulating, or vague hand waving. You know, the sort of thing you do if you've got something to say, it's just on the tip of the tongue, but you can't quite spit it out yet? That would be pretty true to life.

Hugging tips
03-07-2005 22:44
If you are going to wear a typewriter of any sort... don't type while hugging.
I get pleanty of "ACK! Keyboarded" and such if I type something with my arms around a dear friend.
So remember the "slash" trick.
/type a slash before anything that you don't want your hands moving for.
Laptop is sweet Brian! And a big hit with mac fans.
As far as other movements while typing. I hope 2.0 has better finger articulation so that I can start to use American Sign Language in Second Life!

Zuzi, what Loethe mentioned is what I would also recommend if you want to cut down on prims. The shell is for cool aesthetics. Ananda: I think a lot of the obvious ideas, out in the open, are missed until later on. It's a funny thing, kind of like we didn't have pogo sticks until Ben Linden did his Ben-Go. /slashes are handy for modelling ASL in SL would be great.

Hi Torley,
I hate to 'me too' but could you drop one of those override scripts on me as well?
Thanks, Racer Plisskin

two slashes ( // ) are even better , as then they don't appear in the chat at all: Typing "/Hello Avatar" in chat will produce exactly that, with no typing anim. Typing "//Hello Avatar" will produce "Hello Avatar" (no slash) and still no typing. Very useful whenever you want both to keep a pose and the appearance of non geeky dialog.
