Hyperspace is better than Flatland.

Instead of a grid based system with fixed geometry in which we select parcels, how about a system that lets us buy a certain virtual volume, paying for actual resources used (prims, scripts, avatar-hours, etc. used), and selecting the location of our volumes in a 3D space, thus allowing like minded people to form communities by choosing who to be neighbors with, or nomads to travel from volume cluster to volume cluster, or hermits to be by themselves, changing as one's desires change?

This is similar to something mentioned by Catherine Omega's earlier post
