okay, so I am new and i can't find this information anywhere but maybe it already exists but if it does dont be a a jerk and tell me about it cause I'm trying to do the best I can and its just a sugestion anyway and ....

(anyhoo)

What I would like to see is the ability to play my own music at my own house.
Simple no?

Right now we can link to a streaming site, but I am getting really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, tired of "50 cent" and the "Lolipop Song."

If we are already on two way network (are we?) why can't I play my itunes in the game?

It seems to me that the game is about SOCIALISING then one of the most telling things about someone is the MUSIC they like. I have a lot of conversations about music with people, but all we have to listen to is recyled hits from whatever the *least* anoying radio station is that you can find.

Would it not be great to put on an album when someone comes over for tea ? Or at least be playing a song that you like and bought yourself?

my two cents.

If I am crazy or stupid and this is already possible could someoone IM me in the game and let me know how?

Dianne :-)

It's already possible to set up a streaming station on your own. As long as you have sufficient bandwidth to do that and play SL on the same connection, just go grab the software (I don't think there are any that work through iTunes, though), and you can play any music you have on your computer, and stream it out over the internet... including to SL parcels.

Yeah I've done spur of the moment music streaming like this and its a lot of fun. I only played to one person but if you have decent bandwith you should be able to handle at least a few listeners.

If you're using Windows, go here to get Shoutcast software which will allow you to serve your own stream: http://www.shoutcast.com/download/

You'll need both a DJ'ing plugin and a server program. And you'll need to download Winamp if you don't already have it. There are other options out there to all of this but this is what I know works.

If you're on a Mac, I'm not sure what programs to use but I know they exist.

Also, just an aside - there are plenty of interesting web radio stations out there that aren't top 40 hits, etc. It just takes some digging to find them. I recommend checking out the directory on shoutcast.com - where you can run a search for the genres and bands that you like.

Hope this helps... :)

Thanks for the replies esp. on the streaming option.
Seems to me that this is a bit insecure though in that you are handing out IP info to all and sundry. Still wish that I could do it entirely within SL since most of the badwidth use is definitely going he other way and all the songs are right there on my hardrive.

Personally with some of the characters I have met in SL lately, I wont be availing myself of that option any time soon. Having enough trouble with creepy people following me in the game, dont need it in RL as well. But it's nice to know it exists if I ever find a secure server that will let me host all my songs for free. :-)

My big issue with finding iRadio stations is that they typically only have a link to "listen now!" without revealing the actual url. The promoters of such stations want you to link in with a media player like MS Media or whatever, as opposed to simply saying the url is "X" on port "Y".

Very frustrating for the not completely stupid and non-windows crowd.

land url's are not shown inworld. of course that can be hacked. but so can this forum. not sure about iTunes, but i suspect their TOS prohibits this anyway. i'm still debating how comfortable i am streaming music from my CD inworld just for me and to share a bit with some friends.

Yeah I agree the security issue is a valid concern. Even though URLs are hidden now, tech-savvy people can find ways around that. Probably the best bet is to get a 3rd-party stream server host in that case.

As for finding the actual URLs to stations - I know how to get them with Winamp and I'm sure other mp3 players have a way. In Winamp you can do something like "see properties" on the playing stream to see the URL - even if you loaded from a webpage link or the internal radio browser. That's usually how I find the URLs to stations I find on the web.

I think this worked last time I tried it, but it may be fixed now..

I got some free web hosting from tripod, got some MP3 tracks, uploaded them, and put the URL of them into the Music URL box.. They don't stream.. But it gives you the play/stop buttons and they play from beggining to end as soon as you click play.

Its not ideal, and I'm not even sure it works anymore.. But worth a shot hey?

Finding stream urls with iTunes

Alright, I am on a Mac as well and actually know the trick to this, lol. What you do is go ahead and load the stream into iTunes. Then, you take the stream out by dragging to your desktop, this gives you an internet link. Now, open the internet link. You have to have auto downloading off for this to work and I use Firefox as my browser. The browser will open along with a dialog saying something like 'You have chosen to open XXXXX.pls from http://genericmusicurl.blah' you don't download it but instead pay attention to the url, that's what you need to know to get the direct stream.

I went in circles with this for at least 3 hours before figuring out how to get the correct streaming url. Hope this helps!

Or, you could just highlight the stream in iTunes, press cmd-i for "get info", and in the summary for the stream is the URL. There's even an "edit URL" button next to it so you can quickly copy the URL to paste elsewhere, like in SL.

I've tried that and it doesn't give me the correct url. *shrugs*

I wanted to make sure you knew that mac users now have a forum section under technical issues forum. It was just added in the past week or so.
