Last night I was having trouble putting a new pair of sunglasses on my avatars head. Would it be possible to select an item from inventory and directly apply it to the body?  |

Attaching from inventory is a great idea and something we've already talked about here. We want to add the feature, but no one is currently working on it. So you probably won't see it in the December release.
As for difficulty with attaching objects, the current release has a problem with the method it uses to determine if you are 'close enough' to attach. You should be able to attach the sunglasses in the current release by rezzing them into the world, raising them up to about head height, and then attaching them. The next release has better attach logic.

I think attaching from the inventory is a feature which Second Life has deserved and I think it should be implemented in the 1.6 release
