It would be nice to be able to back up our objects and either edit them off-line or simply save them for re-upload in the future. I've already lost a couple of objects I created that simply dissapeared when I dropped them to edit them.
If we could save the objects to our PC's, edit them there, and upload them back with the changes, that would make things so much easier!!

That could be useful if LL provided an offline editor of their own, with all the capabilities of limitations of the in-world editting. If it allowed things to be modified in outside programs, I could see a lot of compatibility problems creeping up when we try to upload.
Just like moving a Poser 5 figure's fingers in Poser, we find that when we try to upload offline content from other programs one little change can make all of our effort moot.
But I digress.. as far as how things are in SL right now, I find I'm usually fine if I just backup an object while I'm working on it. If I use Take Copy(it's in the More menu, after right-clicking on the object), I can take a copy of the object without disrupting my work.

Don't confuse loosing items with just pushing them slightly below the ground. Until you get a good feel for the building tools, it is a little too easy to fling stuff in a direction you didn't want to.
Evan though SL is supposed to return objects that go off world, it is sometimes slow about it. You can turn off ground rendering by turning on the debug mode Ctrl-Alt-Shift-D and then toggle ground with Alt-Shift-5. You may well see the thing that you are looking for just below your feet.
Hope that helps.
