So far, has been my experience for the last 1.5 months, is that after any update of SL there are ALLWAY problems with the Login part afterwards...

I'd say it needs a big overhaul and fix.
It's already annoying for us (Europe located players) to lose 4 hours o playtime; having login problems where people cannot even loging for even more hours (almost until next day in the evening) is getting a major pain in the you know where.

Just my 2cts.

Today I got lucky... Was able to play from 21:00GMT+1 to about 23:00GMT+1 when my PC crashed; That's about 2 hours of gameplay I heard (got IMs) from people that were not able to login, starting at approx 21:20 or so...

What I love is that I saw the announcement "logins disabled" check the status page "The Grid is down" and went back to my client and thought, "Wow, I'm online. Awesome," and kept SLing.

Meaning:
They disabled NEW logins and didn't kick out the people who had already logged in.

It's in their QA Manual, the chapter dealing with grid restarts after update probably contains something like this.

"After a random period within 2hrs, disable client logins, let all hell break loose on forums, go drink a few beers."
