I'm too lazy to read the previus threads of this forum so I'm not sure its been sujested yet...

My BF and I have discussed the dire need of an invisable mode for online status. We have AWAY and BUSY, so why not? It would not make your avatar invisable, just your online status so that anyone with your CC will see you as offline and a people search will result the same. There Is nothing quite as anoying as having a friend drop In unexpected. And seek you out then teleport to our current location every time they come online just cuz there lonely and wan't attention.

Also It would be nice to have the CC's In there own seprate window that lists the online friends above the offline's. But this Isn't a messenger so It's not as important. :)

It's been suggested many times and Philip Linden himself even said that it's a definite possibility... Personally, I don't know why it hasn't been implimented...

Here's to bumping the priority on this feature!

While there are a few people i would like to hide from. Interestingly this feature has already been implemented by LL and reguraly you can find stealthed Lindens (but i'm not saying how :D ; but it's not exactly easy or a convient method to use :( )

Hehe. The lindens obviuosly do need this feature cuz there probably swamped with IMs every time they come online. But some of us have that problem too, so can we please have this tiny little feature pretty please? ^_^

Part of the reason something like this hasn't been implemented, I think, is it presents an eavesdropping/PvP issue - and frankly, I recently bug reported a means of "invisibility" that I'll also not discuss.

As for Lindens, that's different - since they're on the payroll.

Edit: Oh. IM invisibility or world invisibility? IM invisibility would be okay - anything beyond that... ehhh, no. :D

IM / Calling Card "Invisibility"...
02-01-2005 16:08
I know for a fact that its possible to make your status in the "Find" window and on Calling cards appear "offline" when you're not.

I know because I've IM'ed "offline" people and had them respond instantly. :p

But I haven't a clue how to do it; and people so far seem to be tight-lipped about it, for reasons I'm not sure. Perhaps its a bug/hack that isn't intended for wide-spread use?

In any case, I hope that the feature will be implemented "publicly" in an upcoming release; but who knows?

Take care,

For the last few months I have had to use a second account that I don't accept CC's with, just so I could be alone to work or spend time with close friends. My BF does It too hehehe. Oh well, I can allways warn people not to stalk me, then delete there cards If they continue. :p But as for people exploiting It to grief people, anyone who does that needs banned. Why rob us of our privacy? LOL!

I'm not sure if invisibility is a good idea or not, as there are persuasive arguments in both directions, but I do have a suggestion. If the problem is friends dropping in you uninvited, why not simply state politely that you do not wish to be disturbed at the moment?

Something to the effect of, "Hey, nice to see you. I'd love to chat, but I'm kind of in the midle of something here. Can I catch up with you later?" works just fine. Just be polite and be honest. It's really not that hard. There's no need to be afraid to state what you're thinking.

If you're worried about offending people, don't be. As long as you're upfront and courteous about it, you won't offend anyone. Besides, if someone is going to take it personally just because you'd rather be alone at the moment, then they are obviously way too insecure and immature to merrit your friendship in the first place.

I for one would be more offended if a supposed friend felt the need to hide behind stealth technology instead of having the guts to tell me they're busy or that they prefer solitude from time to time. I'd like to think they'd have more faith in me and in the relationship than that.

If that's how much you love your mates, why don't you just tell them to fuck off and delete their calling cards?

It would be nice, I get IM's from random strangers about needing script help. It's kind of distracting when preoccupied ;)

Did that early thismorning. He has been doing this to my bf more then me though. But it's up to him to fix that. We even made the land group only and he still came in. Nothing a guardbot and turrets won't fix, or a BFG-9000 and some land mines. >:) Such methods we could not use in real life hehe.

True True. It can also be bothersom when your multitasking SL with Photoshop switching between the two. Its worse when they TP to you and start begging you to make stuff for them but they cant pay for it. Then they start running circles around you and pulling out random objects. Kinda like a child, makes me wander...

I don't personally mind if somebody knows that I am online. What I don't like is that people can track my location in-world and even teleport directly to me instantly. This is a serious privacy issue that I hope is corrected soon. Although I haven't personally had a problem with this "feature" it does strike me as creepy.

I have found myself in a number of curious situations:

-having 8 IM windows open (some of them fairly time-crucial discussions... it's so strange when a bunch of people declare "We gotta talk about this, and I gotta log soon!" TIME BOMB!) and taking more on because I don't wanna make the next person feel bad. Although, lately, I have been trying to be more upfront about "I'd like to chat but I apologize for being so busy and a lousy multitasker to boot". It's also surreal to have two people in IM windows bring up each other at the same time while they're in separate parts of the gridverse.

-having someone TP and fly to my location, only to find out I'm with one of their sworn enemies -- who is also a friend of mine. Awkwardness results when two of my chums hate each other. And it's sad. :( Thankfully it is rare that this happens.

-it can get tiring to keep explaining that I'm busy. If I set (BUSY) mode on, then there's an autoreply, but the thing is that it hides normal chat messages. Sometimes, I am continuing a discussion inworld but I don't want to appear "frozen" by alternating back and forth between public and private chats. I clearly need practice with this. :)

-some of my greatest SL friendships have come out of people who I initially thought were ignoring my IMs, when it just turned out they were really, really busy. Meeting someone inworld takes on additional dimensions to me, so when possible, I try to talk to them "in person" instead of being remote. Although IM has its advantages -- i.e. when I'm exploring around crazily. (And we don't have Group Teleport mode yet, tee hee hee.)

-relatedly potentially awkward is telling someone or someones "I gotta go for now" inworld and then carrying on a chat in IM. Can I get personal repeaters to go with that, please? :D

All in all, I enjoy and appreciate the company very much. It's just that sometimes it just to be... well... too much, and then I like to balance out that diversity by being in solitude for awhile. More fluid ways of communication are always welcome, 'cuz QWERTY works against us already as it is.

Thanks Chosen, I'm working on that. Well said. If someone responds rudely and can't understand, it says more about them than about you. :D

Only Lindens can do this, and only their Linden persona, not alts.

IM -> email... I use it all the time. And it can look like you're invisible, until you forget to delete the quoted part of the message and the in-world person suddenly gets a heap of email headers in their IM.

Hi Yiffy. (Yiffy's Mate) Just letting you know i also removed that persons CC and muted them cuz of what you and a few of my friends said about him. he is under age and is being dealt with. I am allways being interupted by him. Well though i did remove the CC, he made a new account to stalk me some more. So i had to bring my private account Into the public just to socialize with my friends. From now on i do not accept calling cards from anyone who cannot hold an intelligent conversation with me for more then 10 minutes. And i do not socialize with anyone who acts depressed all the time. They are major downers.

We already have the ability to use an attachment that tells us which people are around "the Notifier" (that should help with identifying people that are buzzing around) Also, we are already capable of spying on people, there is a animation that exists called "Vanish" where you don't even appear in world (though you still see a green blip and the "Notifier" does pick you up). By saying that i want to be invisible to a person, I'm saying that I will appear offline to them and if they IM me i can choose whether or not to respond. As far as my visibility in world, they will see a green blip, and if wearing a "Notifier" they will still see that i'm near.

So either way the spying on individuals is already done, in progress & shows no signs of stopping any time soon.

I personally would love to see this feature (not for spying purposes of course :p ).

I have seen things like that. I've even seen anti push scripts that acually WORK (well, they work better i should say). The best bet is to catch them evesdroping and expose them. If they enter a parcel they're not allowed in then report them. I recently bought a linus for my land. Got it off secondserver.

I think what SL needs is IM invisibility and an IM "Status Message" like Yahoo! Messenger.
