It would be very cool to allow both shiny and transparent properties on a prim. This would allow for more realistic lookking glass, ice, etc.

Yeah, Juro... this is something I've been wondering about since I've come to SL. It always struck me as really odd and I didn't know if there was some technical limitation blocking my way to transparent aluminium joy, or what.

lol, can't be a technical thing. Hell the water is shiny. not to mention if you set shiny on a prim and it's texture hasn't loaded yet, it just has that semi transparent smoke, the smoke is shiny.

It would be very cool to allow both shiny and transparent properties on a prim. This would allow for more realistic lookking glass, ice, etc. Why not set just the opacity level to < 5%. For something like a glass or ice texture, there is still a surface that is not entirely transparent. It would seem to me that shiny would still show up on a near-transparent texture, even if not on a 100% transparent texture. Haven't tested it, tho... _____________________

Until now it doesn't show up on a surface with ANY transparency, that includes textures with alpha (transparent bits), or a transparency any higher than zero.
But now that's changed, yay! Finally nicer looking windows for my shop ![]() |

Now if only shiny, transparent, AND bumpmapped surfaces can work together...

Now if only shiny, transparent, AND bumpmapped surfaces can work together... They don't? No skin off my back, though. SL's implimentation of bumpmapping sucks badly. _____________________
I am myself indifferent honest; but yet I could accuse me of such things that it were better my mother had not borne me: I am very proud, revengeful, ambitious, with more offenses at my beck than I have thoughts to put them in, imagination to give them shape, or time to act them in. What should such fellows as I do crawling between earth and heaven? We are arrant knaves, all; believe none of us.

No, they don't... but maybe someday

They don't? No skin off my back, though. SL's implimentation of bumpmapping sucks badly. The 1.9.1 implementation of bumpmapping is better, though still not perfect. Transparent and bumpmapped don't work together in the current 1.9.1 preview. As soon as you make an object even 1% transparent, the bumpiness disappears. I bug-reported it; a Linden acknowledged the problem and said "hopefully they will fix it eventually". |

Specify bumpmap texture!
04-27-2006 07:39
Allow us to specify our own texture for bumpmapping.
Right now, with bump mapping limited to the handful of textures provided by LL, it's pretty much useless. Let us specify our own textures! |
