Okay, we have XML-RPC, which will allow us to utilize web based front ends to things in world. What would be nice is to have a miniture web browser integrated into the SL client. Basically the ability for a script to pop up a window within to display a certain URL (with permission of the user perhaps).

Basically syntax would be something like:
llDisplayURL(string url, integer width, integer height) where url is the url to the web site, width and height are the dimention of the window within the client.

This would allow for things like having graphical preferences for objects, GUI's for games, allow direct dynamic text besides llSetText and llSay based. Would solve some of our desire for custom UI. Would allow some nifty stuff and real world integration. Opinions?

Would be nice, but would it be just the webpage or would it be a built in browser with the webpage?

Either way it would be nice to have some graphical in/out to websites.

Once I can browse the web and talk on instant messengers from within SL there will be little reason for me to have much else running.

hmmm yea definitely would be useful.... would bring whole new meaning to "virtual desk space" eh?

That opens up a whole mess of other considerations too... say for application files (Word, etc.), webcams, streaming video, etc.... of course always limiting us is the bandwidth consideration...

I beta'd a 3D VR prog a while back (PlasticPlanet3D) that could display movies on picture objects, and I know that Activeworlds can pull in picture links that are updated at a given interval (I have seen people use their webcams with this function working).

I dunno bout displaying anything other than simple text/graphical pages though, I suspect you'd run into all kinds of coding issues if you were trying to display something like Flash or Quicktime.... but I could be wrong! LOL

Actually, a very limited HTML viewer is actually already in the game. The Help. Hmm, considering this, would overall implementation be difficult?

Whilst I'm usually against SL becoming anything more like There, the web browser is one function that I liked in There. Browxxor Pl34z3!

Ahem. Perhaps my last post wasnt entirely clear.
What about SHOCK SITES like the (now-defunct) goatse.cx?
Furthermore, everyone hates pop-ups. If you pop open a browser window on my screen without my consent I will hunt you down and kill you.

Maybe "<objectname> wants to open <url> in your webbrowser, do you accept?" or some such. Maybe have a "Always accept" from friends kinda dealy.

If its an object that displays it, maybe have the same thing, but once you enter the parcel instead of on the send of the url to be opened. Like the streaming audio thing in 1.4. "<thisparcel> has an object which displays <url>, would you like to render this object?" or some such.

But thats more popups, eh.

An in-game web-broser with this function, would be most useful. I have my friends check out my sites often, but they don't want to go out of game to do it.
