As in a post by SuezanneC /invalid_link.html I was remined of a desire for a new feature in SL. In addition/modificaition to the post above, I think that there should be a stream viewer. Added as one of the main buttons at the bottom, onw would be able to select from a list of avialable stream in an area. From this list one could pick either the music stream for the parcel OR select from avilable streams from nearby clients. Ill be adding a post with a custom farbicated conceptual pic later.

Personally, I don't understand what's so difficult about running iTunes or Winamp in the background along with SL. I don't see the need to spend effort developing features to do things which we can already do.

And on top of that there continues to be gross misconceptions that if streaming audio or video doesn't work inworld, it's SL's fault. A lot of those times, it's found that the media URL is infact broken (by testing in QuickTime Player of course), or someone doesn't have QuickTime installed in the first place, etc. It's nice that it's piped into SL, but it sure sounds like it causes a lot of trouble. It would additionally be nice if SL showed more informative errors when things did go wrong, tho.

DoteDote, your missing the point completely. This is for both public and private streams. Say you want to stream a station of your own to a small group of people in your sim/plot/club whatever but dont want to make it open to the general public. Ontop of that, not every one uses SL in a windowed form, AND this would promote Community. Im not a fan of Suzzane's presentation of the idea but the fact remains of the idea it self. Clients being able to provide streams to eachother independant of location. One might say it gives me a reason for me to be wearing my headphones all the time, having my own personal preference aviable to osthers to get in on the action.
The point is NOT to simply provide an in system replacement for winamp, but another way for users to interact. _____________________

I much prefer the idea of streams tied to a location.
I have a 70's themed nightclub, with a 70's themed audio stream playing through it. It's not quite roleplay as such but the whole atmosphere is completed by the music. There is no point in a visitor coming to my 70's themed club, listening to today's latest techno rhythms or classical music, because it isn't the atmosphere. I have put a lot of effort into creating the atmosphere so that people get caught up in the theme, and with the music there is no mistaking the aim of what I am achieving. As far as clubs go, most don't seem to have any theme at all - so what I am providing is quite rare, and I'd like to keep it that way. If people really don't want to hear my music choice in my club, then they can of course turn off the music stream - but I don't feel comfortable in letting people choose from what's playing on nearby parcels of land, on my land. Especially when you consider that many of the streams that people choose to play are, in my opinion, total crap, and so much 'gangsta rap' full of expletives that I have no desire to have being listened to on my property. After all, what's the point of picking the streaming audio for my theme, if users can just override and listen to their own thing anyway? Lewis _____________________

I guess the aspect i was coming from was if you dont own land and a group of people are out in the middle of no where and want to just have fun. They dont have to own the land and they can do a "Select-a-Stream" from one of the people in the group that has a URL in their profile. No more of this uploading 10 seconds per file crap to get a song in world at a foreign location.
