Why are we still using 2d monitors?

Since Perspecta supports OpenGL, can we have support for it so that we can project SL in true 3d in realtime onto our desk tops?

(Oh. And can someone buy me one?)

kthxbye :)

It would be nice to see a whole sim on our desktops, but everything would be very tiny. The globe is only 20". When they can make an affordable 6' diameter display, I'll get one. :D

•People have been talking about true 3D displays since 1992 or so (I remember an article in Discover about it) and I think it's taking too long because of stonewalling from within the industry. Remember how long it has taken to give us HDTV (10 years!).
•Didn't Ralph Kramden talk about waiting for "3D Stereovisions" before getting a TV? He ended up sharing Norton's set though...
•When will we be getting 4D eyes so we can look backwards in time?

Here's a far cheaper alternative you can use with your existing CRT monitor:

I have those! :D

I can recommend them. They rawk!

However... neither they nor the stoopidly expensive ones offered as alternatives above are 3d! It's just a way to make 3d a bit more convincing on a 2d medium. So nyah!

But seriously.. these 60 buck jobbies are just as good, if not better than the more expensive ones. Oh, and get their DVD software if ya get them - it converts DVD movies to 3d in realtime in the player. And does a darn fine job of it, too.

When I look at how much desk space my monitors occupy I think I would say they are extremely three dimensional. Not the display, of course, just the thing itself.

How do the glasses like the one's Beatfox pointed out work with needing reading glasses? Are you expected to get your reading glasses between your eyeballs and the 3d glasses?

Those 3D glasses are designed to fit over any eyeglasses you may have. I got the wired version a few years back and they fit over mine fairly well, although they do have a tendency to slip down my nose.

Alternatively, I'd settle for support and someone buying me this...

I remember watching a 3D display (normal looking screen, 3D image - not those silly globe things :p) at ECTS years and years ago. It wasn't all that great but I hear they've come on a long way since then.

Anyway, it is possible to buy relativly inexpensive 3D monitors (here's one for example) we're just waiting for support for the standard APIs.
