I'm doing a research project on Second Life for a psychological methodologies class. I am using a survey to collect demographic data as well people's particular feelings about various aspects of Second Life and their real lives. This survey is completely anonymous, not even your SL name will be associated with your responses should you choose to participate. Participation would be greatly appreciated!

Here's a link to the survey if you're interested: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=u9riTR3TNtjwKI1QBea_2bHg_3d_3d

Thanks!

Well if that wasn't a set of the most suggestive questions I have seen in a survey for a loooong time. I doubt this one is scientifically valid-surveys just don't work like that. Or it's such a sophisticated psychological trick that I don't get it....

Holy Shit! Could you spin those any further into negativity? Sounds like great fodder for the next tell all TV expose'. You get an "F"

*I usually ignore these surveys, but Alyx's comments piqued my interest. I know she knows something about these sorts of things.*

This survey is not intended to slander anyone or Second Life at all. It may seem suggestive because the variable that the survey is measuring has been omitted in order to prevent biased responses. This particular test has been validated by other studies pertaining to online environments. If you feel uncomfortable or are in some way offended by the survey then please do not complete it.

Odd options...

I have completed your survey - but...

Why is there no 'Never' option? 'Does not apply' is not the same response - it has a very different meaning! Your data will therefore be flawed.

There is no difference between 'Frequently' and 'Often'!

Two dictionary examples:

American Heritage Dictionary
fre·quent·ly
adv. At frequent intervals; often.

OFTEN: Synonyms constantly, continually, frequently, oftentimes (or ofttimes), repeatedly

Very true, there were a couple of questions which didn't apply to me, but several where the answer was "never". The two are not the same at all.

I agree with the criticisms others have raised.

In question 4, what do you mean by "form new relationships?" Following a question about one's RL partner I wonder if the implication is romantic or sexual relationships. But it's not clear, and the answer is going to be considerably different if you mean sexual relationships or *any* relationships.

And yeah, way to skew negative, especially without providing a "never" option to those horrible questions. You seem to be ensuring that people who have a healthy relationship with SL give up on your survey because there is no way for them to answer your questions correctly.

I know little about scientific and psychological testing but this one certainly seemed biased. By not having a Never option, I was stuck with does not apply a few times. The survey would seem to show, and probably will show with its results, that Second Life has had a negative impact on a lot of people's lives. There's many of us who enjoy it but aren't obsessive. However, this survey, with its questions and potential answers, seems like it's going to skewer the results towards negativity. I think there should have been more questions where a positive answer could have been given. These questions seem to be about addiction, obsessive behavior, compulsion and geared towards marital or family problems. There may be another survey, now or later, which has more positive questions and answers in which to measure this one against but as it stands, I think it shows a very negative view.

Please keep in mind that this is not trolling. This is constructive criticism or at least that is the way I intended it. I did finish the survey anyway and I wish you luck.

Thanks for your insight guys. I've been having a lot of issues with confusion surrounding the whole "does not apply" vs "never" option, but I don't have enough time to rework the survey and wait for new responses. This is not a major study, it is for an undergraduate course, so it won't be published or anything it's a learning experience really. Anyways thanks to anyone that participated and I plan on posting the results sometime in the next few months when I have some time :)
