Last week, Meta Linden released a breakdown of the percentage of residents from 100 countries who have logged in to Second Life in the past 30 days.

See the link to the spreadsheet here: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pxbDc4B2FH95A_Mr7_a_gVw&gid=7

I was intrigued by some of the countries that showed up in the bottom part of the 100. For example, as of today, April 2, 943,744 unique IP addresses logged on for at least an hour in the past 30 days. .01% of those people, or 943, were from Angola. Another .01% were from Lebanon, Armenia, New Caledonia or other countries that are generally not considered to be highly developed. At least, you won't find virtual worlds loaded on the desktops of the typical family. It is likely that the people logging on from these countries are USAID staff, expatriates, or NGOs. But that's what is intriguing-- 900 people is a decent number; perhaps they are working on interesting projects in SL.

Compare those numbers to Greece, for example, where 51,905 people logged in, or half a percent. Putting that all in perspective, 31.19% percent -- or 292,560 -- came from the USA.

As editor at SL News Network (www.slnn.com) I am researching any potential stories that could come from this data. If you are one of the 900 people in Qatar, Ecuador, Bahrain, French Polynesia, etc., or even the approx. 7500 from Estonia, I would love to hear from you.

Very fascinating. I know several Serbians who show up at the community pool in the sim where I live. They definitely are true Serbians with varying internet connections. They speak English very well.
I can arrange a meeting if you wish.
