Hey there, I recently went through and documented the steps to get your own simulator running independent of the Second Life grid.

Check it out!

Enjoy!

I'll be sure to check it out, it's definitely something that's needed for sure. I'm fairly proficient at that sort of stuff and it was 2 or 3 days of pulling teeth to get standalone, then grid mode running. Thanks for your efforts!

After reading about OpenSim on the other thread, I had to give it a try. After a couple of hours of reading and downloading, I had my own sim up and running. I logged into a sim that had no terrain (rezzing under water) and then I flew around a little. It was really awesome. After that I started playing with the maps (nothing there of course) but the sim soon crashed.

I immediately began the task getting MySQL up and running. I can't wait to get off work so I can go home and start playing with it again.

I used Maxx's tutorial yesterday it is an awesome tool for those who were before a little afraid to try this.

I have my own sim now on my PC and got the wife's PC hooked to it today too. Lots of fun having an entire sandbox to do what you want with and not paying $285 a month. :D

Thanks again for your work on this Tut, Maxx. It made an opensim user out of me.

I have my own 3 X 3 grid setup for a couple of months now using V.5.5 of Opensim. I generated the terrain using Terragen to cover the 9 sims with a tropical archipelago. No crash ever. Using rex viewer or Kirsten viewer allows you to create prims up to 100m. It's the best. It's also easy to open it to other users from the net, so you can invite friends in. And using Second Inventory, you can transfer your full perm stuff to/from SL/Opensim with ease.

Woohoo! I did it! And I'm an artist and only hobby geek (demi geek? semi geekette?)

Anyway, I have 45000 prims!!!!

I love it...

If I can do it, anyone can..

Now to learn how to port back and forth.

whoooo hooo Im such a a blond and I did it in less than 15 minutes! I just followed directions and with blind hope ran it and it WORKED!

Granted its not sl yet, objects are phantom for some reason and I dont have a thing to wear. But Im sure it will all get figured out somehow. Again, if it werent for the forums!

I had it -OPENSIM- running for over a hour and not a single hiccup. I experimented like crazy and found out a few things i would have NEVER dared to do in my Real SL setting.

BTW(restrained life viewers ROCK for being stable for me! Iv'e run as long as 8 hours with no crash more than once, except when the lindens are doing something bizzare.)

Ooooh, Please tell me how to get Second Inventory? I can see how to get multiple regions and will try it at some point.

And how do you open it up to your friends?

Or can you tell me where to find this info?

Actually, you can go over the 15000 prim limit in OpenSim.
It simply ignores it if you go over it.

If anyone need a professional configuration on OpenSim, feel free to IM me in-world and I will try to make a set-up that fits you best.

True.. but the people at Second Inventory are constantly upgrading the software and soliciting feature requests that they try to implement.

It is so very worth the money. I have used it often and found it very easy to learn. Even had one issue that was my fault and they helped me figure it out on the forum there.

Something free may come along, but the support and updates are not likely. :)
