From the website linked above:
From: someone

Money is an important thing as well in first life as in Second Life. Without money, there's hardly no life. In Second Life the currency is called Linden Dollars (L$). You need L$ for buying land, for creating groups, for paying employees or whatever. You can make money by begging, borrowing, by selling things, but there is a smarter and quicker way: refer friends... US $ 900,- is within your reach!

Second Life money is real money. You can buy L$ with US $ and you can sell L$ and convert them back into US $. The current exchange rate is about L$ 270 to US 1,-. So if you earn money in Second Life, you will earn money in first life too. The only thing you will have to do is convert it...

The quickest and easiest way to earn money is by referring friends. For each friend you bring in into Second Life, you earn L$ 2000,- (let's say US $ 7,50). Send a postcard (with screenshot) , use the online referral form or invite them using your website (like this). For more info check the official Second Life Site.

Not enough friends or in need of more money? Make - or literally create - friends! Just invite yourself and create more avatars. For each extra avatar you create, you will receive the same L$ 2000,-. The whole process of creating an avatar takes up to 5 minutes. So: 12 new avatars an hour should be do-able, 10 hours a day, brings in 120 x L$ 2000,-. Which makes L$ 240.000 and almost US $ 900,- a day! Skip your holidays, set your little brother to work, hire your granny, beg your neighbours, make your colleagues and richness is near...

Enjoy your friends. Enjoy richness. Enjoy life. Enjoy Second Life.

Anyone willing to comment on the accuracy of the above?

You only get the referral bonus if they go premium. (remember read that somewhere)

You are correct. Otherwise everyone will be doing that!

Possibly you read it in the Registration FAQ, which says:
From: someone
If you sign up for a Premium Account your referrer will get L$2000! They will be credited after appoximately 35 days, assuming we are able to bill you successfully for at least two months of membership. Get in world and refer your own friends for Linden Dollars! Basic accounts no longer qualify for referral bonus.

That sort of puts a dent in the reasoning shown below, doesn't it?

It's important to include costs in determination of profit, isn't it?

SL referral program really "sucks" as most people do not convert to a premium account. Keep in mind that out of 2,000,000 users only 40,000 people have a premium account (1/50). I understand LL would only pay out for premium accounts otherwise people would be creating tons of alts (as they did in the past), but the payout should be much higher.

Consider that at the very least you pay a one time fee of $10 US, so, if you want to convert it to L dollars thats 2700L approximately, so if you get paid 2000L, doesn't that mean you're in the hole by 700L, or $2.59?
