My SL blog uses a wordpress theme that looks good in the profile web page window--constrained width, no sidebar. But I'm considering a redesign, and I wonder how people actually use other avatars' web window.

I don't care for the browser in the profile web tab. It's just too limited, and does not properly display many common blog templates.
I wish they would offer a link or button to automatically launch the site in your external browser of choice. Cutting and pasting is possible, but is definitely a pain... as those of us using the forums these days know all too well! |

Ava, there is such a button. It's the "open" one, I think.

I run customer-support through my "Web" tab in my profile. It's just a simple 400 px. wide form that I host on my website on which customers can fill out a support request and send it to my e-mail address.
Doing so allows me to keep customer support requests organized, never miss anyone due to capped IMs, etc....AND --most importantly-- allows me to continue working throughout the day instead of being stopped every 2-3 minutes with IM conversations. ONE THING THAT PISSES ME OFF AND HAS BECOME MY NEW #1 PET PEEVE IN SL: I DO NOT WANT TO WATCH A YouTube.com MOVIE OR LISTEN TO A MUSIC FILE WHEN I OPEN YOUR PROFILE! DO NOT LINK TO AUDIO OR VIDEO IF YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE A WEB-TAB PAGE!!! PLEASE!!! _____________________

I very much like the web option in our profiles; it makes it a lot easier to explain what I do in my filmwork...saves 1000's of words and serves as a way to advertise my RL biz.

There isn't much that you can do with the cutdown version of the web tab, that you cannot do in your profile fav picks.. putting in a website address is sometimes better than squinting at 20% of a webpage, if anything, it does the website a misjustice. I only click the web tab either by mistake, or as a last resort to see if any useful information is available. An ingame/client browser would prove much more useful.

I use it for Twitter, which fits rather well in the small space! (You can see up to 45 characters without right-scrolling, so is ideal for short 'twitters').
Before that I had tried a scripted attachment, called Squawk I think, that did Twitter updates using http requests. The problem with that approach is that it won't run on parcels where scripting is not allowed. So putting the url for your own twitter, i.e. http://twitter.com/username and you can twitter away from within SL regardless of script restrictions. Oh, if you don't want to twitter yourself, you could still look at other's, such as http://twitter.com/torley or http://twitter.com/JimPurbrick to follow what Babbage Linden is up to! |
