Hello, I have designed a search engine for SL places called SLHotPop (for Hot and Popular places).

It is currently in open beta, until I get the server I've rented set up. I will certainly make it evolve based on the feedback received so feel free to criticize it.

I've written a FAQ (even though I know none of these questions have been asked already), and I'll be glad to answer your other questions in this thread or by IM.

Of course it is not totally finished so please report any problem or error you might encounter to me :)

Oh, there is a group SLHotPop which is free to join should you want a regular chat about it.

SLHOTPOP FAQ

What is SLHotPop?
SLHotPop is a free search engine designed for places in Second Life. It provides search facilities, based on
land keywords, votes, surveys, lag and total donations. Each places are listed with a SLURL link which allow the residents to teleport there.

Where is it?
You can access the beta version here: http://www.slhotpop.com/infoparcels.php5

What is the SLHotPop board for?
The board is used to register and unregister your lands, add more keywords for the search engine,
allows residents to vote for and survey your land, and also works as a tipjar

How do I get the board?
You can get it for free at Twisted Designs Main Shop in Ceilostomo

What if I don't want surveys or votes for my land?
You can disable it in the options

What are the survey criterias?
Actually Overall,Crowd,Camping,Friendly,Music,Design,Shop. It is subject to change based on feedback.

Is Camping considered good or bad?
I have my opinion but it doesn't matter here. The survey only asks how many campers do you see around.

Do I have to pay residents for votes or survey?
No, it's your choice if you want to reward them for votes and surveys.
I would recommend to disable payments until you are familiar with the system.

"Rewarding" for surveys or votes is another way of camping...
Not really. It takes thought to answer a survey. Also you don't control if the survey anwers will be positive or negative.
Also it just takes a few minutes to answer a survey.

Won't people just vote or answer surveys over and over to get more money?
Surveys and votes are limited. Only one survey ever and one vote every 24 hours.

What is Time Dilation?
It is a measure of lag. The closer to 1 the better it is. I feel it is important that residents know in advance

But I am going to lose all my money if too many residents come vote or survey?
You can set a cash limit until when the board stops paying

I have a tipjar already. Why would I use SLHotPop for tips?
SLHotPop tipjar lets you share your tips with Twisted Pharaoh.

Why would I share my tips with Twisted Pharaoh?
The service is entirely free, it will help paying the server bills.

Ok, but is there any benefits to tip sharing?
By default the search engine lists the best donators first. The donations will be reset every week.

How do I add more keywords to my land?
Place them in the description of the SLHotPop board, up to 128 characters

Will my private place be listed on SLHotPop?
No, only the places who drop the SLHotPop board will be listed

Can anyone set a SLHotPop board over my land?
No, to function it will need to be set by the land owner or by a group officer in case of a group land.

Unexpectedly I received the server info today, I thought it would take a week or more...

So I did the transfer and it is back online but it will take up to 24 hours to update the DNS so it won't work fully until then. My apologies to those who I've sent a version earlier today since it's already outdated. You can get the fixed board here:

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Ceilostomo/160/52/88

I just go the info it can take up to 1 week to propagate the DNS.

The DNS has been propagated to the LindenLab servers so the service is now available on SL.

A new board is available at my shop and the beta test will continue for some time, but probably I won't wipe the info unless major problem since it is on the right server now.

Depending on where on Earth you are you might or might not be able to see the search engine page though.

Again, I apologise for the troubles and I'll keep you updated at the end of the beta phase.

So how, exactly, are you collecting the data for your search engine?

Not happy about Linden Labs purchase of XStreet (formerly SLX) and OnRez. Will this mean LL will ban resident run online shoping outlets in favor of their own?

So how, exactly, are you collecting the data for your search engine?

The data is retreived and sent by the board to the server when a land owner (or land group officer) registers the land on the board.

My first version was a voting HUD that would register everything you come across but I found it intrusive and decided toward the board solution instead. So no registration of your land against your will.

Transmitting your datas to third parties without your prior and express consent is illegal in my country, so if you are suspecting me of doing it (but I'm not) you can send the case to this organism: http://www.cnil.fr/index.php?id=41

By the law of my country you are also entitled to have your data edited or removed (which the board allows). You also have the right to look at the datas I'm keeping (yours of course).

Purpose of the files :
computer processing must be done according to an explicit end purpose; it is with regard to this end purpose that one can appreciate the relevant, adequate and non-excessive nature of the data recorded, the categories of persons or organisations who may receive these data, and the duration for which the collected data may be stored (Articles 226-21 and 226-20 of the Criminal Code: using personal data for purposes other than those that justified their collection, or storing them beyond a date justified by the purpose of the processing is punished, respectively, by 5 years' imprisonment and a 300 000 € fine and 3 years' imprisonment and a 45 000 € fine).

Information of individuals :
the persons whose personal data are collected must be informed of (1) the compulsory or optional nature of the responses, (2) the consequences of failing to give an answer, (3) the categories of persons or organisations who could eventually have knowledge of the data, and (4) the place where the right of access and rectification may be exercised (Article 2 of the decree of 23 December 1981: failing to give information is punished by a fine of 1 500 €).

Though you would have to define personal data in the case of Second Life. However the only thing I'm keeping is your avatar key and not displaying it or giving it to anyone.

Every person may, on simple request addressed to the organisation in question, have free access to all the information concerning him in clear language (any codes must be explained) and obtain a copy against payment of a fee, fixed by the State, of 3 € for the public sector and 4,6 € for the private sector.

Every person may directly require from an organisation holding information about him that the data be corrected (if they are wrong), completed or clarified (if they are incomplete or equivocal), or erased (if this information could not legally be collected).

Every person may oppose that information about him is used for advertising purposes or for commercial purposes;

he may also oppose to information concerning him being disclosed to a third party for such purposes. The persons concerned should have the possibility of exercising their right to oppose the disclosure of their data to a third party at the moment the data is collected. The use of automatic calling machines or faxes for advertising purposes is prohibited unless the person has given his prior consent.

Every person may ask the CNIL to proceed with checks of the information concerning him

which may possibly be recorded in files concerning security of the State, defence, or public security (right of indirect access). The CNIL verifies the relevance, the accuracy and the updating of this information and can demand that it should be rectified or deleted...

That's all I needed to hear. ;) I wish you much success in your endeavor, and will check out the site tomorrow after work. I just wanted to make sure you were not using one of those invasive, lag inducing, obnoxious bots which a certain company has been using.

Thank you. The site is moving to www.slhotpop/index.php or simply www.slhotpop.com

Yeah about spying bots I believe a french resident could submit the case to the CNIL and see what they say about it. But I'm not a lawyer hehe.
