OpenSIM named D-GiG (Bootable ISO!)

D-GiG stands for Distributed Global Information Grid and that is because mostly I don't like hippos and secondly it's a fork of the OpenSIM project that is hosted by the Electric Sheep company that runs off a CD that will automatically detect your hardware, display a interesting logo, and then prompt you to login into your freshly booted 1 simulator. So you have all the basic abilities you would have in the regular Second Life client. There is nothing done to the OpenSIM code at this time it has just been modified slightly via con-fig files and boot scripts to load when the system boots.

Boot splash:

Simulator running!

Logging in...

Simulator Prompt:

Inside the simulator!

After downloading the dgig.iso you can mount it in a virtual machine (100% efficient still). It is possible to run the distribution cd from a regular PC but this is not really recommenced as I can only fit so many drivers in a 700Mb image file. This is highly experimental and alpha software that we use in-house for demonstration purposes to potential clients and we thought it was time to share it with the rest of the world.

Important things to remember:

Neat, but you forgot the link.

Also, I wasn't clear, is it running from it's own O/S or on Linux or what operating system exactly? Thanks. :)

Cool, just like Knoppix. Knoppix is a Linux system run-from-CD, same "Windows and Mac-formatted 700mb", although its Linux-unique formatting allows it to hold approx. 2GB :O.

You mean to tell us non-techies that this is an alpha level sim software, and if you run this on your PC you will actually have your own "Second Life" sim to play with with all the capabilities? 65k sq m? 15k prims? Say it ain't true!!!

True or not, that day is swift approaching. One thought i had in that regard is as follows...

The public (free to copy, trans) assets could be available to offsite sims without exposing the general asset servers. Weather this is true or not or feasible or not I mearly present it as a possibly usable option.

The reason this appeals so greatly to me is that content could reside on your HD where rendering could be blindingly fast. (Imagine if only position scale and rotational data needed to come down the wire)

Is there anyway this could be implimented with openSIm IDK, but i am curious. and would like to learn more.

Well, technically it ain't true :-p. OpenSim is so alpha-level, even the prim count in "Parcel Properties" doesn't function properly. Plus jerky physics, but that'll be fixed. In addition, several stuff crash the server regularly:

1. Using "Smoothen Land", "Roughen Land", "Flatten Land" and s'more Terrain tools.

2. Triggering "Light" on and off a lot of times

3. Etc...
