I wasn't sure what thread to use for my information that I need. I am writing a novel concerning SL and would like to know the guidelines I will have to use, without infringing copyright, etc. My names will only be christen names - would I be allowed to mention the names of some sims?

One way round the names thing would be to register alts with the full names you want to use, then you could be sure you're not treading on anyone's toes.

Considering that many sims use RL and fictional names from other sources, unless the sim has either trademarked or copyright the name you probably will be ok. But you really should NOT be seeking legal advice from the forums. The opinions are only worth the amount you paid for them.
You can find specific information about SL(tm) here:

If you want to actually publish your work for profit, it is important for you to be certain your work is not in violation of LL's trademark, copyright, or TOS agreements.

First, read all of the information here and the associated links:
http://secondlife.com/corporate/brand/trademark/index.php

Then, contact Linden Labs directly (contact instructions are in the FAQ) to speak or correspond with a legal representative who handles these issues. There may already be a precedent for this, or you may be forging new territory; either way, it's better to get all information directly than from hearsay.

[EDIT: Destiny beat me to it.]

It could work both ways. The novel could be seen as beneficial to Second Life - you might even be able to try to get it endorsed by Linden Lab!! But that's jumping the gun a bit - best to write it first LOL.

However, why not set the story in a fictitious virtual world if you're worried about copyright?

same, I was also writing a book, except it's not going to cost any RL money. Everything I do as part of my "Seven Steps to Creativity" is free of charge.

I don't care about profit during this economy:

Suggestion you use a fictitious grid name is valid - and solves a lot of problems - many seen and unseen traps - however - merchants who have there heads screwed on, will realise that curiosity factor will have reader doing a search on the names and places you mention in the story (fictitious or not) and may even sponsor you. Bit like placement advertising.

Steer clear of diddums's (TM) else they will have to go stand in the corner and suck his/her thumb and stamp their feet.

Great to hear someone is not trying to make a profit - go for it and congratulations for the idea

I wrote a short novel (incomplete) based on Second Life and made up completely different names, protecting the rights of other characters out of respect rather than because of copyright issues.
