Hi Everyone.

I've created a new fansite for SL, called Virtual Suburbia.

The URL is: http://www.virtualsuburbia.com
The RSS feed is: http://virtualsuburbia.blogspot.com/atom.xml

*Big* thanks to Cristiano Midnight for allowing me to use Snapzilla as the image host.

Description: The Architecture of Second Life, reviewed on the fly.

Why I'm putting another SL fansite out into the world:

1. For those unacquainted with Second Life, I thought they might want to see some of the interesting things people are building, and provide a bit of commentary from an architectural perspective.

2. For those of you in Second Life, I thought I might start the discussion of what exactly constitutes architecture appropriate for a virtual world.

3. To contradict the claims of mainstream design magazines such as Dwell, who suggest in the August 2005 issue that "avatars seem to resort to cliched design tropes." There are RL architects in this world, and even more creative people, unconstrained with thinking like an RL architect.

4. To focus on what I consider to be good examples of space and form, and reflect perhaps on what it means to shelter ourselves in a place where there is no need for shelter.

Who am I: Just another Av enthralled by the possibilities for building in SL, trying to undo everything he knows about RL architecture (I.E. failed SLRR entrant, see this thread), drawing on everything he knows about the experiential qualities of space, having fun discovering new places in SL.

The reviews are intentioned to be shorter and more frequent as opposed to longer and infrequent. If you have any thoughts on the format or suggestions for builds worth reviewing feel free to IM me. I hope you enjoy the site :)

I'm definately bookmarking this blog!

As for that Dwell comment, ya - it did sting a little huh? I gotta cut them some slack, since it's my favorite architecture/design rag, but I think they went a little over on the generalization with that comment.

Luckily, we now have you to fight the mighty dragon! ;)

Sound a very good idea...

Virtual suburbia could be really the way to investigate what architecture and design represent in Virtual World.

sincere compliment

I've bookmarked this blog, obviously...

New Post - Waterfront Studio, Carnforth
10-18-2005 22:17
Hi Everyone,

Just posted a review of Cottonteil Muromachi's waterfront build in Carnforth:

http://virtualsuburbia.blogspot.com/2005/10/waterfront-studio-carnforth.html

Thanks for the tip Torley! If anyone else has suggestions for interesting builds feel free to drop me a line :)

It has been great to see architecture being more broadly discussed in the days since SOP. We'll try to help keep it from dropping off the radar screen...

Thanks for the posts! I've enjoyed reading it. I'd like to see more critical review of design in SL in addition to architecture.

Chip have you checked out Octal's Khan's place yet? I think it would be a great build for you to write about.
